Lael Dewhurst Obituary

Lael Dianne Dewhurst May 16, 1942 - August 2, 2018 Oceanside/Carlsbad Lael Dewhurst, 76, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, August 2, 2018, from cardiac arrest in Oceanside, where she had been residing with her husband Don, while still maintaining their Carlsbad family home of 45 years. Lael was born May 16, 1942, in Bradford, PA, to Dick and Francy Johnston. Not long after her brother Rick was born, the family moved to La Jolla's Bird Rock area where her father established Beach & Bay Realty in 1947.Lael attended elementary school at Stella Maris Academy in La Jolla. It was there that she met Don, in the fourth grade. She then attended Academy of Our Lady of Peace and after graduation, went on to San Diego State University where she was an active member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority.Lael and Don were married August 25, 1962, at Mary Star of the Sea Church in La Jolla, and then moved to Redlands while Don finished his senior year at the University of Redlands. Upon Don's graduation they moved to Pasadena, where they were blessed with twin boys and a daughter. Shortly thereafter they moved to Carlsbad, where, by their mid-20's, they were blessed again with another daughter and son.Following her father's footsteps, she became a real estate broker and co-founded Karlsbad Realty in 1974. She was sole owner several years later. She served on the Carlsbad Board of Realtors holding various positions and was president by the time she was in her late 30's. A former employee said, "She was my mentor, had a passion for work, but of utmost concern was her wonderful family." Today, Karlsbad Realty is the oldest real estate firm in Carlsbad. In addition to the Board of Realtors, Lael served on Carlsbad Boys & Girls Club, and Casa De Amparo. She was a member of Junior League of San Diego and Soraptomist, among many others. She also volunteered at numerous charity events helping others any way she could. As one friend remembers, "She always put others before herself," and another friend saying, "She left footprints on our hearts."Sporting events among her five children kept her busy. Many times she attended several different events in the same day. She always looked forward to hosting team get-togethers after the games.Lael had a zest for life. She loved cooking and hosting dinner parties on any occasion, especially the holidays. At Thanksgiving and Christmas, anyone who did not have a place to go was welcomed with open arms, including Marines from Camp Pendleton at times.Lael is survived by her husband of 56 years, Don; brother, Rick Johnston; sons, Dave, Doug and Donald, and daughters, Donna (Doyle) and Debra (Johnson). Her 10 grandchildren include Brody, Brinkley, Briggs and Jack Johnson, Kelsey, Delaney, Emily and North Dewhurst, Bethany and Olivia Doyle. All of the family lives locally.Memorial services will be held September 20th at 11:00 at Mary Star of the Sea Church, 7669 Girard Ave., La Jolla. Following the service a reception will be held at the La Jolla Woman's Club, 7791 Draper Ave., La Jolla. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Carlsbad Boys & Girls Club (Carlsbad Village Clubhouse) or Brother Bennos Center in Oceanside. Donations can also be made to the Academy of Our Lady of Peace in San Diego.

To Don and all the Dewhurst "kids"-my heartfelt condolences on the passing of your Wonderful Lael. Truly a force of Nature. She was such a hoot to speak to every year when she ordered the tents and equipment for your huge family Thanksgivings-and I am honored that she always asked for me-I loved giving your parents a discount! She was a very good and comforting friend to my Mom throughout their friendship, which we can count back to the St. Pats and Blenkarne Dr years. Lael's consideration will always be much appreciated. A very special Lady-gone too soon. You are all in my prayers. Hugs and Love to you all-
