Ben was such a sweet and kind neighbor. Will miss his wonderful smile

On our rainy Cambria moving-in day , a smiling, energetic man came striding up our stairs carrying a small box saying something about water. We stopped unloading stuff, let the charismatic Ben into our upper bathroom and inner hearts.
Industrial sized hugs, Michele.

My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Bastiaan (Ben) Boer. I loved him from the moment I met him and continued to love him even after our marriage ended. He was a devoted father to Brian and Liz and became equally devoted to their spouses and his grandchildren. My daughter, Lily Maino, was treated as one of his own in our seventeen year relationship.

One of his favorite sayings was: Don't look back if you don't want to go in that direction. It served him well after Vietnam, although I believe he never got over the wounds from that experience. He was one of the hardest workers and strongest men I've ever known, but he would be embarrassed to be praised in public. He was a very private man, despite his public persona. He was loved by many, including my family who knew him as one of the truly good men.

My deep sympathy goes to Michele, Brian and Liz, their mother, Kathy DeGroot, their families, his surviving brother and two sisters and their families, his family in Holland, especially cousin Evelien, and his many friends and acquaintances in Cambria. May he finally rest in peace.
All love, Barbara Morningstar and Lily Maino

Ben was so kind and thoughtful, especially when he was going through this illness, he was optimiscally happy all the time. Ben always had a smile on his face...when bringing in a single rose to say "thank you" or bringing a tray of his awesome key lime pie to share. We will miss him very much! Condolences to his friends and family.
