Jim, one of the best friends I've ever had. He literally gave up a raise at Cal Poly when he was the only one on the Eng. Dept faculty to have the courage to vote to keep me on the faculty, during the protest days against the Vietnam War and the Draft. I travelled with him across country to Maine and back to Ca. One of the highlights of my life. He, in my opinion, is in a heavenly place and happy. He made a lot of us happy when he was on this plane. When I dream of him or think of him, he is smiling. He not only was, but is, a great spirit, and we will all see him again when it's our time.

There has been no one like Jim in
my life: nature lover, poetry
lover, spiritual being. He helped
me produce my magazine, Cafe Solo,
now in its 40th year. I am dedicating the next issue to him. The theme is "Central Coast poets say what needs to be said." Jim always said what need to be said!

Jim continues in our best memories. We shared the Big Sur, special friends, poetry, love interests and colorful times with jim and we will all know it when we get there.

Most sincere condolences to Jim's family. Am happy to say he was one of my English professors. One particular incident in class taught me a lesson in tolerance and freedom of expression I will always remember. Jim had a way of listening that always made you feel like you were the most important person on earth. My self esteem always improved when I was around him. His passing also brings back memories of the Brotherhood Coffee House in Cayucos - Jim would attend and listen to me sing Dylan songs. A lifelong appreciation of American literature is also due to Jim's good works. Quite a man!

Jim and I first met during the 60's when we shared concerns for our students and disdain for the Vietnam
War.He didn't mind expressing his views.I enjoyed our disagreements as much as our agreements. He will be greatly missed.

We will celebrate Jim's life on Monday, Memorial Day, at 2 pm. Come to 1298 Strand, Oceano.

Jim liked to find streams after a rain, stand at the end of the bar in his handsome hat, and throw pennies across the Department of Motor Vehicles floor. He was a colorful, wonderful fellow that we will miss tremendously.

I have not seen Jim since the late 1990s, but I will always remember him as a very friendly soul. The last time I spoke with him was in front of the Anderson Hotel Barber Shop on Monterey street in San Luis Obispo. When you have a free moment in the months ahead, John, please e-mail me. There is a wonderful story about your dad I want to share. Our condolences on his passing.
