Karstein was my very good friend and colleague. We became friends while working together on MS Sunward. This was in 1965, and we kept in contact ever since. Karstein used to call regularly, and we also sent each other greatings for christmas. Therefor I became worried when I did not hear from him this last christmas. I am very gratefull for the letter and the pictures I received from Ann a few weeks ago. Karstein passed away much too early. My most sincere sympathy goes to Ann and the family.

Uncle Karstein , we will always remember you as a special person in our family..You were kind and thoughtful and a friend to your cats and dogs. It was fun to sit on your deck and swing in the glidder swings and watch the sun go down. You tried to help us see the ' green flash', but we could never see it.. We'll keep looking for it.
We will all miss seeing you when we come visiting in Morro Bay...Love from , The Provensen Family,
Richard, Jeanne, Marissa, Shannon, and Gretchen...

It was almost this same time of year 32 years ago that you came into our lives, Karstein. You dined us and wined us on the beautiful 'QUEEN MARY', permently docked in the Long Beach , California harbor, and asked us for our daughter, Anne's hand in marriage. In those thirty-two years you shared your life with our family. You were the Captain of our ship on several NCL cruises, We listened to stories of life in Norway and came to know your family in Tromso and Oslo. Your stories of experiences around the world on land and on the sea kept us entertained and introduced us to places that we had only read about. It was special for us to share some of these adventures.. We tasted some of your Norweigian cooking, (.. favorites were "STORM SOUP' and learning to poach COD correctly and serve with boiled potatoes and bacon grease.). Our visits to the Hansen Family took us to Miami, to Hawaii to rain, shine, snow and Hurricane . and then to beautiful Morro Bay, Ca. sitting on your hand-crafted glidder swing, throwing the ball to sweet Pike/ and listening to stories of adventures........
Karstein, you are a generous, honest, interesting , good Man........, truly , as Anne has always said,

Thank you for Finn and Heidi ,our first two wonderful grand children and for sharing these past 32 years.
You have enriched our lives...and we love you..

Most sincere sympathy to Anne and family. I had the honor and pleasure of working with Karstein at NCL and sailed with him often. Always the consummate Norwegian seaman and Officer, a gentleman and a true Viking, I know he is with other cruise friends now.

My deepest sympathy to Anne, Heidi and Finn.
I first met Karstein in 1975 when I came onboard the Starward as a Chief Radio Officer from the Southward. He was the best Captain I've ever sailed with. He gave us freedom that nobody else did and we all respected that. My plans were to come down to Morro Bay after the Holidays. Even though we had not met for about 20 years, I still considered him my good friend and Boss.
We talked on the phone several times. These calls were not 4-5 minutes. No they were more lie 45-60 minutes.
I miss him very much.

Karstein was always a star at Sons of Norway Stillehavet Lodge where he had many friends over the past few years. His stories of Norway made recent historical events come alive for us and his smile was infectious. We will all miss his gentle spirit.
