Remembering our Rita Marie It has been 12 years since a part of our hearts stopped beating along with yours. We arent quite sure how or why we have survived but we know that our time here is not finished. It has been so hard to understand that it was your time, that you were called home. We know it in our heads but in our hearts it hurts so bad. We miss you sweet girlyour smile, your laugh, your enthusiasm and unconditional love for everyone and everything!! In some ways it seems like just yesterday I can hear your giggle, I can see your beautiful face, and I can hear your thoughts, what you might say, in my head in other ways it seems like such a long time I miss your snuggles and hugs!!! You are remembered with every breath I take and you always will be until we meet againand until then we will live, laugh, love and enjoy every moment with have with all our loved ones making new memories and cherishing all the memories of YOU! Rita was an amazing girl, she loved life, and tried to live it to it's fullest. This is Rita's legacy, love life, live for today, and I believe this is what she wishes for us. As hard as it is for me to understand, even in death she has given me great gifts in all that she has left behind.
It is my Catholic/Christian faith to believe in God and divine order, and that this was Rita's time to be called home. I will never really know why this happened. I am so relieved to know that in God's infinite mercy, she did not suffer, from what we know she never knew what happened, it was that quick. I find comfort in thinking maybe Rita had accomplished whatever it was she needed to accomplish. My good friend said to me at the time If God's lesson was love, Rita got it, so maybe her mission was finished. I think my friend was right. I will never stop missing Rita, her huge smile, laugh, and hugs, but I know she is with me in other ways.

Each one of us is born for a specific reason and purpose, and each one of us will die when he or she has accomplished whatever was to be accomplished. The in-between depends on our own willingness to make the best of every day, of every moment, of every opportunity. The choice is always yours. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

I was told a story about a young man losing his good friend; he said It's hard to get over it. the good friend's mother replied Why would you want to? What we have to do is make her dying a part of us, just as the rest of her life was. You must take it into yourself. Breathe it in. Take it into your soul and let it remake you. A young man who has lost his best friend is a very different young man from one who has never had such a thing happen. The young man was then able to say I could once again see my friendsee how she helped me shape my life and how she would be part of it forever. Rita will be with us forever.
In many ways she was wise beyond her years.
You Left This World Amazing Gifts Memories of You.
I have talked about Rita leaving gifts and messages for us. This book and passage we found in her car. There were only a small group of items that could be recovered, due to the rain and the accident. Andy recovered what he could find. He brought the things home, among them was the book The Prophet. When I opened the book it opened on page 80.

Rita marked two areas with carats on that page:

You would know the secret of death.
But how shall you find it unless you seek it in the heart of life?
Trust the dreams, for in them is hidden the gate to eternity.
The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran
Found in Rita's car, she used it as a study tool, underlining passages

To me it is easy to say, what a coincidence, but there are too many coincidences. Her Photobucket password: liv4today, that is her legacy .
Sara felt awed that Rita's death occurred between the streets Prado-where she fed the homeless, and Margarita, the name of her purse designs, where she had planned that all proceeds would go to help orphans. The poems Rita left us, the ones she wrote for her uncle and aunt who died, she read them at their funerals, their messages are clear Rita believed in eternal life, she believed her loved ones were never very far away. And speaking of loved ones who had gone before; just an hour before Rita died she was reading the book of her Grandpa's letters, talking about how much she missed him. And when she died she was wearing his jacket. I believe and I am comforted by knowing that he was there with her, and now,
She is smiling down upon us with the ones who have passed before...
RMG 2005 (Poem for my Aunt Judy)

And of course we must remember her poem Love selflesslywhat and incredible message. I will never forget it. I don't believe any of these things are coincidences.

When someone dies, you don't need to get over it by forgetting; you get over it by remembering, and you are aware that no person is ever truly lost of gone once they have been in our life and loved us, and we have loved them. Leslie Mammon Silko

And so I remember and I will carry on Rita's legacy!

love selflessly
dive into the unknown
all you have is today
care about people
who don't care back
and hope that they will be okay
be yourself
and no one else

and know
if you feel as if you're in an empty room
arms stretched out
i'll be there to hug you.

I love you baby girl!!

My sweet Rita,
I have such a hard time believing it has been 9 years since you left this earth. Every day I remember you and your compassion and enthusiasm for others and for life itself. For such a young girl you taught me so much about love and what really matters here on this earth. I have been committed to live in a way that honors you and your time on this earth. I miss you terribly and we remember you always. You are with me every moment of every day. I love you with all of my broken heart. Until we meet again sweet wonderful daughter of mine

Hi Ritz,

Not a day goes by that I don't think about you. The legacy you have left behind, even at 16, is one that will be cherished forever. You have changed the lives of, I'll say it, hundreds of people. I will keep spreading the word about how great you were and what you inspire within me. I wish you were here to see all this greatness, but I know you are watching from above. Thank you for being my friend and making my childhood better. You made moving to this area (and Girl Scout camp) a lot less awkward. Miss you and love you!
