I'm one of the coast boys mentioned by Pat O'Daniels. We had no idea that Vernon lived so close to us. Sorry we never made the connection... Irv

I was surprised to see that my former Dean of Men at College of Sequoias was born in Los Alamos and attended Santa Maria High School. He never told us that, but then, just eight of us from San Luis Obispo enrolled at C.O.S. in Visalia back in 1958. This was before Cuesta College was built, and San Luis Jr. College (enrollment approximately 64 students) was on campus with San Luis Sr. High School.

Why Visalia? A lot of us wanted to go away to college, but most of our parents didn't have the money to send us away and pay rent, living expenses and tuition. My older brother had married a Visalia girl and told me how cheap rent was, plus he could get me a part time job with his fathert-in-law, and most of us could work in the college cafeteria. Pay: "All you could eat for one hour's work." No deductions, no pay stubs. Tuition was just $10 a semester for full time students. (These were true "Community Colleges". I understand that the County of San Luis Obispo paid Tulare County X-amount of dollars for each visiting student attending C.O.S. Today they are "State Community Colleges".)

There were only 1,300 students at COS in that 1958-60 era, and everyone took care of out-of-town college students. Including the faculty and administration at COS.

I think Mr. Silva had a special spot in his heart for all of the out-of-the-area students, especially those from the central coast.

Sorry I didn't know Vernon was so close, or I would have stopped by.

My memory of Uncle Verne was when I visited Verne and Mary Jane in Avenal. There son Greg was a newborn and Robin was a few years older. They gave me wonderful memories in my 17th year. This was my first trip alone. They have always been a loving couple I have admired these many years. Love, Sadie Mae

I wish I could have been at the Service. We did not learn of this passing until March 26th.

I will be in Contact with Aunt Mary Jane.
