Gretchen and Anna,
I am so shocked and saddened by the news of Mark's death. I worked with Mark at the Free Clinic as a volunteer physician. He represented all the best qualities of one involved in health care of the marginalized of society. His respect and care for all people was always evident, whether they were kind and appreciative or not. His medical knowledge was vast but understated. He knew how to make a way where there was no way--get a referral, get a CT- he made it happen somehow.

He was a Renaissance man, knowledgable about so many things. I loved picking his brain about the history of the South. He was an attentive listener who made you think your observations were very fascinating. I have followed Anna's progress through school as we have a son her age who also moved to Oregon after college. We shared stories of launching our kids and the emotions that comes with that.
I am so thankful to have had the privilege of knowing Mark and working with him. It was an honor.
I am praying for you both as you grieve this tremendous loss.

For a great soul, I knew. God speed.

When Great Trees Fall, (Maya Angelou)

When great trees fall,
rocks on distant hills shudder,
lions hunker down
in tall grasses,
and even elephants
lumber after safety.

When great trees fall
in forests,
small things recoil into silence,
their senses
eroded beyond fear.

When great souls die,
the air around us becomes
light, rare, sterile.
We breathe, briefly.
Our eyes, briefly,
see with
a hurtful clarity.
Our memory, suddenly sharpened,
examines,
gnaws on kind words
unsaid,
promised walks
never taken.

Great souls die and
our reality, bound to
them, takes leave of us.
Our souls,
dependent upon their
nurture,
now shrink, wizened.
Our minds, formed
and informed by their
radiance,
fall away.
We are not so much maddened
as reduced to the unutterable ignorance
of dark, cold
caves.

And when great souls die,
after a period peace blooms,
slowly and always
irregularly. Spaces fill
with a kind of
soothing electric vibration.
Our senses, restored, never
to be the same, whisper to us.
They existed. They existed.
We can be. Be and be
better. For they existed.

My deepest condolences to you and your family during this difficult time. Mark was an exceptional person, always giving, always caring and very compassionate. May God wrap his arms around you to help you find comfort and peace. May Mark's everlasting love for you help your days to find a ray of sunshine. Grief is a difficult journey, but with God beside you, and Mark forever in your heart, one day at a time. Mark's spirit will always live with you because that's Mark. May the God of all comfort strengthen the family during this time of deep sorrow. Those who pass on, God keeps in his memory because they are precious in his eyes. My sincerest condolences. (Psalms 116:15)
