John and family and the Cates family,

We were saddened to read of Cindy's passing. You would tell us John how determined she was in fighting her battle.

So very sorry for your loss.

Two summers ago I took my older son to his first concert, Elvis Costello. As the lights came down and Elvis came on stage, I saw that he was wearing a red fedora but not red shoes. It was a terrific show and a grand introduction for my son to stepping out. On the way home I mentioned a song that Elvis hadn't performed (The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes. That immediately led to thoughts of Cindy, and I regaled my son with tales of friendship and big fun and about how so few people in the world can carry off wearing red boots, and how lucky I was to count one as a dear friend. For a person who defied definition and one who when she entered a room quickly owned it, Cindy will forever be a bountiful whirlwind. For a while she touched down in Boston between Commonwealth and Brighton Avenues. It was the only time in my life that I had the blessing of proximity to her. Those were heady and halcyon days. Luckily, in the years that followed I was favored to persist as a satellite to her sun, and even as time and distance pushed my orbit outwards and away, thoughts of Cindy could illuminate dark times and would warm cold ones. So as Cindy arrives upon heaven's stage, the angels might wanna wear some red shoes, but they won't be able to wear them out. Cindy is in town, and no one can compete with her, how she wears her red boots, and on whom the spotlight will shine on the dance floor.

Thoughts to the family. She was always there with a smile when we worked together at United Way.
