I had Dr. Andersen for my spectroscopy class while studying chemistry at U.W. It was one of my favorite classes within the major, as I felt I learned so much from Dr. Andersen.

I recall my final exam. We were given a vial of an unknown and a few hours in the spectroscopy lab and a few hours in the library (pre-internet days!). Then we had to draw the structure on Dr. Andersen's chalkboard while he looked on. It was high stakes, and I loved every minute of it.

Thank you, Dr. Andersen, for fueling my love of chemical structures. To this day, I share stories of this class with the high school students I teach when we discuss spectroscopy.

My condolences to his friends and family.

Niels (always along with Susan) was a sincere champion of the singer-songwriter community in Seattle and a reliable, loyal audience member (and sometimes concert volunteer). As a songwriter myself, I will miss his careful listening and authentic enthusiasm for the people and sounds in the world of acoustic music. Condolences to all the family.
