Maureen Salaman Obituary

Maureen Kennedy Salaman April 4, 1936 - August 17, 2006 The First Lady of Nutrition, Maureen Kennedy Salaman, passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home in Atherton, with loving friends at her side. An internationally known expert, lecturer, and author in the field of health and nutrition, Maureen's accomplishments could fill volumes. Petite, yet willful, Maureen often surprised those who did not know her with the force and persistence of her energy, drive, and intelligence. To those who knew her, though, this was simply vintage Maureen. Born in Glendale, CA, Maureen early on moved to San Mateo County with her family, where she attended Sacred Heart School in Menlo Park. Later, she studied at and received her degree from the International University of Nutritional Education as well as an honorary doctorate from Oral Roberts University. The British Guild of Drugless Practitioners also recognized her educational achievements as did the Canadian Council of Professional Certification. Maureen authored many bestselling books - including her monumental encyclopedia All Your Health Questions Answered Naturally. Her books, which are still in print with multiple re-printings, have sold many millions of copies throughout the World to people seeking nutritional answers to health problems. Not content with just being a bestselling author, Maureen also spread her message of health and freedom by founding and editing several nutritional and health-freedom magazines as well as writing columns and articles for various newspapers and journals. She also was a speaker of extraordinary ability who knew how to say just those words that could touch and motivate individuals. Because of those skills and talents, she appeared regularly on television and radio programs and even hosted her own television program, Making Healthy Choices, reaching some 40 million viewers throughout the United States. Maureen had a unique talent for motivating people to take personal action to better their own lives. Fervently patriotic, Maureen believed in her country and the men and women who defended it. In the 1970s she was a vice presidential candidate for a major third political party. In 2006, just a few months ago, she was asked to give the memorial speech at the 62nd anniversary commemoration of the World War II D-Day invasion of Normandy in Sainte Mere Eglise, at which time Maureen received a medal from the American parachutist veterans' organization. It was her last of many trips to France and Europe. Her patriotism also extended to her belief that America should remain the land of health freedom. A tireless campaigner for health freedom for more than 30 years, Maureen was both major financial support for and president of the National Health Federation - the world's oldest health-freedom organization for consumers - for more than 20 unprecedented terms. She once single-handedly prevented dietary supplements from being subjected to harsh postal restrictions by commandeering an airplane seat next to the sponsoring congressman as he returned home and convincing him by the end of the flight to withdraw his bill. In 2005, the NHF awarded Maureen its Health Freedom Hero award for a lifetime of achievement in promoting health freedom. Generous to a fault, Maureen was always quickly ready to pull out her checkbook to fund worthy charities. She was the sole support for many years for Camp Hope, a Connecticut-based charity that provides numerous inner-city children the chance each year to get out of the city and spend time in a country environment. She also was actively involved in funding and promoting numerous animal-rescue and care organizations, including especially Redwood City-based Pets In Need, Inc., upon whose board of directors she had also served. A longtime member of the Cathedral of Faith, Maureen was a devout Christian who regularly attended and provided financial support for the church. She also was a member of the Knights of St. John. Maureen was a widow who left no husband. She is survived, however, by her brother, Marine Corps Lt. Col. Thomas Gillespie; a son, Sean David Morton; and many close friends. Friends are invited to attend a celebration of this warm and loving woman on Monday, August 21st, at 11:30 a.m. at the Cathedral of Faith, 2315 Canoas Garden Avenue in San Jose. Burial to follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Camp Hope, P.O. Box 1622, Litchfield, CT 06759, or the National Health Federation, P.O. Box 688, Monrovia, CA 91017. Maureen's last wishes were to have her life's works continued.

Not sure what to say?

Maureen Kennedy Salaman was a special guest of ours at the telethons I produced for the Christian Television Network in Clearwater, FL between 1986 and 1994. Here it is near the end of 2017 and I've been thinking about her all day, and was going to call her. Maureen accomplished more in her short life span than most people can only dream of. I'm so sorry I didn't keep in touch with her.

November 25, 2017

Here it is 2017 and had no knowledge that Maureen had passed on. I only looked her name up on the internet after re reading a book of hers. I am saddened to hear she had Pancreatic cancer. I heard her speak many years ago on the Benny Hinn ministries TV here in Australia. I have enjoyed reading her her books on down to earth advice on healthy eating. I prey her family will be comforted to know how loved she was all over the world. God bless you all.

I was at first shocked and then deeply saddened to learn

of Maureen's passing. I loved her dearly.

I have read all of her books and use the Maximum Living Products

everyday. I have shared her books with many others who have also

benefited from her wisdom. I made a point to see her "Making Healthy Choices" everytime she was on. She will be missed so much.

If anyone would have lived to 120 I was sure it would be Maureen.

She was beautiful, inside and out.

My deepest condolences to her family.

Maureen Salaman has very deeply inspired me for the last few years. I had never met her but through her writings, I realized that we should all aspire to be our very best. Her love and compassion for others was very evident. I think if the world had more people like Maureen, it would be a happier place.

Dearest Colleen and Family - I would like to extend my most sincere sympathies. Your mother was a wonderful, bright and colorful person! I was her VP of Publicity from 1988 to 1992. We all loved working for Maureen and it was a very special time. We had many funny adventures building Statford Publishing and MKS during this era.

Maureen taught me so much that I have benefitted from in my professional career - many times over. I truly cherish those memories - and she lives in my heart always! We had way too much fun. Your mother had a tremendous sense of humor too.

Thank you Maureen - for all the great memories.

I met Maureen three different times when she came to Pittsburgh. She was unlike anyone I will ever meet. When I told her about the chronic illnesses my father, sister, and mother were having she was always sincerely empathetic and she seemed to care about the stress that it had on me. Sympathy is all too often forgotten by health practitioners but it can go a long way on it's own to heal... Reading these posts makes me cry because they'll all true. It was a shock to learn she left us, and it's terrible to know she can't be reached to ask for her advice and attention. I wish she would have let everyone know how she felt about fighting cancer herself and a few parting words, but I guess that's too selfish to ask for.

What I realized most over a period of time from listening to her is that I didn't have to be solely dependent on a practitioner. I could learn and know enough to take control and help myself and my family.

She encouraged my own feeling that we all have that knowledge inside of us about what we need to do to heal.

"There is a light seed grain inside. You fill it with yourself, or it dies." - Rumi

I'll never forget her and she'll be greatly missed.

I was shocked and saddened to learn of the death of Maureen, a unique and amazing woman whom I knew through social connections in San Francisco. We spent time together at charity events, social gatherings, at her home and her place at King's Beach at Tahoe along with her beloved departed Great Dane.

I send my deepest sympathy to the family, especially Sean whom I met at Tahoe and to her staff and closest friends.

I met Maureen through my mentor, Suzanne Caygill. We were both Autumns and asked to participate in a fashion show for Suzanne. It was at this time that Maureen became aware of Karl Rolfes, he had done my hair for the show. Maureen typified the Pixie Autumn in that she was, full of energy, strong and determined. Years later, Maureen helped my mother trememdously with her product Mineral Rich. I witnessed such improvement in my mother's health, that I did a section of the video promoting Mineral Rich. Even my mother's neurologist couldn't believe the improvement in a year after taking the product. And, our internal medicine physician, who did not even believe in vitamins, thought he should begin taking the product. Maureen's passing certainly reinforces the notion that when it is one's time, it is one's time. Who could possibly have taken better care of herself than Maureen. I'm sorry I was not aware of her services; but I will certainly pay her a visit at Oak Hill.

I am speechless as I feel a great sense of loss for someone I never met, but whose advice I lived by. Her book, All Your Health Questions Answered Naturally, is a constant companion and nutritional bible of sorts. I am greatly saddened that I won't experience her energetic answers to all of our health questions. God's gain in Heaven is truly our profound loss here on earth.

After working for Maureen for the past 14 years I can attest to her tremendous drive to be successful and make a difference in the world. Her love for the WWII soldiers of Normandy was passionate and consuming. Her desire for freedom of medical choice was unrelenting. Maureen may be gone but her influence on others will be forever; never forgotten.

I am so shocked and saddened to hear of Maureen's passing. I always thought she would outlive us all (PS: I'm only 39 years old). I was her "Right Hand Woman" from 1991-1994 and worked very closely with her. In that short period, I learned more than in all the years since. Her energy was boundless, her standards for her customers exacting, and her faith unwavering. The Christian Community has lost an ardent advocate.

I received word today that my mentor and previous employer has died. Notice I didn't use the gentle term of "passing". Maureen didn't do "passing". Not in life and certainly not in death. What Maureen did could never be referred to as gentle either...she was instead ablaze with passion. Maureen was an advocate for freedom and an ardent supporter of empowerment with her own fiery version of Newton's first law of motion. Her take was that an individual shouldn't remain at rest but move and keep moving with direction and speed, taking any unbalanced forces that would act to hinder that movement to war. She was a constant and powerful reminder that the capacity to successfully choose one option over another is greatly enhanced by a generous portion of information. Dynamic and charismatic...Maureen used her gifts to influence others. Her specialty and perhaps highest calling was lavishing the starving masses with a tantalizing buffet of nutritionally saturated facts garnished with savory morsels of lore and laughter. She was the first individual to ever drive home my understanding that despite hardships in life, we are byproducts of our own choices. We always have a choice. I'm both comforted and empowered greatly by Maureen's life message and I for one will miss her more than words can express. I am both honored and sincere when I say that it was a privilege to work for her in the field of health and nutrition. The experience ended all too soon. My hope is that today in heaven or where ever all good people go to rest that Maureen will be confident in knowing that she did indead maximize her life by enriching the lives others.
