Paul Domergue Obituary

Paul Domergue

May 19, 1933 to July 9, 2018

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Paul Domergue. Paul was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and a friend to many. Paul was born in San Francisco to parents Arthur F. and Georgette Palma Domergue. He attended Grammar School at Notre Dame Des Victoires, High School at St. Ignatious Boys School, and College at University of San Francisco.
After graduating from USF, Paul served in the Army as a Lieutenant. He was stationed in England where he met his first wife Teresa. Upon completion of his service they returned to San Francisco and made it their home base. Paul then attended embalming school in order to join the family business Gantner- Mason-Domergue Funeral Directors where he worked with his father Arthur, his sister Jeanette Grialou and her husband Gustave Grialou. In 1975, the family business merged with Halstead N.Gray-Carew & English where he continued to direct funeral services. After several years, he then moved to McAvoy, O'Hara, & Evergreen Mortuary where he served for almost 30 years. Paul finally retired when he was almost 84 and had more than 57 years in the practice.
There were many clubs that Paul was a member of including the French Athletic Club which he was a past president for, La Ligue Henri IV of San Francisco, Les Faneurs, La Gauloise, and Druids of San Francisco. Being a proud alumni of the St. Ignatious Class of 1951, Paul would meet religiously with his classmates for lunch every first Friday of the month at the Balboa Café for which he was recognized for attending over 100 gatherings at this favorite spot. He also enjoyed bowling, hunting, and golf.
While Paul was growing up, he enjoyed summers up at the Russian River with his close school friends. He developed a great love for the area. In his adolescent years, Paul's parents always encouraged Paul and his sisters Jeanette and Claudine to bring their friends over to the family home in the Sunset District. It had a huge social hall downstairs and was often the center for group gatherings and a great place to entertain. Many wonderful memories were made at all the celebrations there.
Paul and his family enjoyed vacationing at Lake Shasta where they stayed on houseboats and where he loved to fish. From there they would travel directly to Mount Lassen where he mastered the art of stream fishing. He also loved to visit Yosemite and to travel occasionally to the Russian River. Paul eventually was determined to see other parts of the United States and at which time he and his second wife Margie travelled to over the next 20 years. Paul loved the Russian River so much that eventually he and his wife Margie bought a second home near Armstrong Woods where he enjoyed having the company of his family and friends no matter what the occasion. There is much to be said as Paul had a full life.
Paul was predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Georgette Domergue, his sister Jeanette Grialou, and his two brother-in-laws Gustave Grialou and Albert Garrigues. He is survived by his devoted wife Margie Domergue, his daughter Nicole Domergue-Brunner, his son Brian Domergue, and their mother Teresa Domergue. He had a great love for his grandchildren Erik Brunner, Lindsay Brunner, Elaine Brunner, Gavin Domergue, and Fiona Domergue. Paul is also survived by his sister Claudine Garrigues, his two Godsons Greg Grialou and Art Chambers, as well as many nieces and nephews.
The Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 19th at 5:30PM with the Vigil to follow at 7:00PM at McAvoy, O'Hara, Evergreen Mortuary 4545 Geary Blvd.at 10th Ave, San Francisco. The Funeral Mass will be held Friday July 20th at 10:00AM at Notre Dame Des Victoires Church at 566 Bush Street, San Francisco. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma

Not sure what to say?

I'm a Gantner Family descendant and long familiar with the Domergue name (Gantner, Maison, Domergue). May Mr. Domergue rest in peace. I bet Paul knew Fred and Rose Gantner and my father, Walter Morris. My deepest sympathies.

I have amazing memories of Paul, Terry, Nicole and Brian and the rest of the extended family sharing many special (and some raucous) times together. Paul was such a good friend to my Mom (Charlotte) and Dad (Gerry) over so many years. My sincere condolences to Mrs. Domergue, Nicole and Brian. Take comfort in knowing that now you have a very SPECIAL guardian angel to watch over you. RIP!

paul was also quite a basketball player. He was in the 8th grade when I was in the 4th grade. At that time, we 4th graders always wondered out loud who was the better player, Rudy Zannini or Paul. That year, the NDV 90 lb CYO basketball team won the Northern california championship by beating St. Elizabeth of Oakland. Other team members included bernie Simpson and Tommy Reyes. RIP

I am so saddened by the loss of my dear friend Paul. He and I and Margie have spent so many wonderful times together at their house in town and up at the river house. He was a true patriarc of the family. Everyone loved Paul and he will be missed by so many. Good bye dear friend. ~JACK~
