John Richardson Obituary

John Darcy Richardson

John Darcy Richardson, 85, of Santa Rosa, California passed away Thur, Sept 28, 2017. A service will be held 2:00 pm, Friday Oct 6, 2017 at Resurrection Catholic Church, 303 Stony Point Rd., Santa Rosa, CA; Father David Shaw will be presiding; a burial will follow 12:00 pm on Saturday at Holy Cross cemetery, 1500 Mission Rd, Colma, CA. Memorials may be made to the National Foster Parent Association, http://nfpaonline.org/donate.
John was born July 10, 1932 in Niagara Falls, NY and spent his youth in nearby Youngstown attending the all-grade Youngstown School, notably awarded the National Bausche & Lomb Science Scholarship in high school. John was a member of the Army's 82nd Airborne during the Korean Conflict. After which, he took a spontaneous road-trip to Northern California in the early-60s on the promise of an area-need for building engineers. He landed in San Francisco and became active in the wildly varied local culture. Of particular note was his lifelong membership in the International Tall Club where he met the deepest love of his life, his wife – Joan Faulkner, who unfortunately passed in 2001. John was an active Civil and Surveying Engineer for the Operating Engineers Union, Local 3, for 30 years.
John's memory was encyclopedic; he had the sharpest and most astute of minds complemented by an endlessly generous heart; he was truly a beautiful person and a soft soul, peppered with eccentricity. John is survived by a large family of foster children, two sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins and an extensive greater community of friends, who to John were family as well. He will be missed by many, particularly his two sisters – Ruth and Jane and the daughters and sons he lovingly brought into his life – Barbara, Pauline, Mark, Tracy, Robert, Larry, Joel, John, Vince, Steve, Aaron, Heath, Michael, Chris.

Not sure what to say?

We miss you enormously. Will always remember the wonderful times we had as community volunteers, riding in your golf cart during our visits with you, driving together to memorials and parades with the whaleboat, having a meal together at fun places. You will always be in our hearts.

John, your gentleness is missed and Thursday mornings will not be the same. Always a kind word and smile. Jokes and stories of your travels. So many hearts you have touched. God needed another angel way to soon.

Eternal rest grant into him O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen. Sincere sympathy to John's family. John hosted my aunt, cousin, Virginia Anna Nancy Bukowski, and me at his home last year, August 2016, for a day, and treated us to dinner at Bodega Bay.

My condolences to John's family. I only knew him from our local coffee shop, I would see him at least a few times a week. He always had some type of subject to talk about, if he didn't, he'd find one! He reminded me so much of my great uncle in so many ways. I will really miss seeing him sitting in "his" chair there, facing the door so that he could analyze each person that came inside. Haha, we never knew what he was going to randomly ask people and that was the entertaining part! Sending love to all of you.

I will never forget the kindness and love that John and Joan showed my mother all those years ago. Through her I came to know this wonderful couple who shared their lives and loving hearts with so many. As was said in another note, "John always came looking" when he saw me at mass. I just spoke to him on the Sunday before he left us, and he was still as witty and positive as ever. He will be missed by many of us, but I take comfort in knowing that he is at last reunited with his beloved Joan. Rest in Peace, John.

I will miss seeing John at church. He always came looking for my daughter during mass. He and my daughter had a special connection since she was a baby. He had such a big heart, big smile, and the best laugh. I loved when he wore his button that said "I Love Joan". John will be missed.

John was a lovely and large presence at Johnny's Java. I looked forward to returning from trips to see him sitting and speaking loudly to anyone who walked in. Conversational with a volume that demanded attention. And a sweetness trickled through it all. He cared. I will miss his gnarly and oft inappropriate humor and glistening eyes.
