Bulebosh, Edward J.
Edward James Bulebosh, age 91, of the Town of Mitchell, WI, passed away Thursday morning (November 16, 2017) at Rocky Knoll Health Care Facility.
Ed was born to Albert and Rose (Takac) Bulebosh on July 17, 1926 in Humphreys, a coal mining town of about 330 people in southwestern Pennsylvania. Ed attended the town's one-room school and enlisted in the Navy when he was 17 years old. Ed served in World War II aboard the USS Siboney. He was honorably discharged on May 16, 1946. While in the Naval Reserve, Ed was called back to active duty in 1950 at the start of the Korean War. He served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Princeton off the coast of Korea for nine months. He was released in October 1951.
After his discharge from the military, Ed used the GI Bill to train for a career as a journeyman tool & machinist and, later, as a tool design engineer in Chicago. He spent most of his professional life as a tool designer in Pennsylvania, Illinois and Wisconsin, and taught himself CAD in his late 60s. With his wife, he also owned and operated a bed & breakfast, Spring Tulip Cottage, for more than 20 years.
He met the love of his life, Louise (Luckow) on a blind date in Chicago in 1952. Ed and Lou were married on November 26, 1953 and would have celebrated their 64th anniversary this month. They spent the first third of their marriage in Mundelein, IL, but loved to take vacations in Wisconsin. It was on one such trip that they discovered their dream house, a former one-room schoolhouse, in rural Plymouth. They moved there permanently in 1976, fully enjoying the wildlife, fresh air, and beautiful scenery of rural Sheboygan County for more than 40 years. In the 1980s, they purchased an adjacent care takers cottage and remodeled it into the dollhouse Spring Tulip Cottage B&B.
Ed enjoyed auto racing, auto mechanics, woodworking, birdwatching, gardening, dancing and listening to Big Band music, watching baseball, football and hockey on TV, and fixing things. He was a huge fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Steelers, and the Chicago Cubs and Bears, and spent many nights attending the races at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds and Road America. He was famous for his fresh fruit salads. For decades, Ed was a coffee klatch regular at the Fifth Wheel and, later, the Hub City Restaurant in downtown Plymouth. He took pride in having the best organized garage and woodworking shop in the neighborhood, and he loved tinkering with the family cars.
He was extremely generous with his time and talents. He wouldn't hesitate to stop and help passing strangers experiencing car problems, enjoyed giving rides to hitchhikers, and for years he drove around with a box of gloves in the back seat of his car, in case he saw someone in need of a pair on cold winter days. Before holiday meals, Lou knew to put an extra plate on the table, because Ed invariably brought home a stranger he had just met. He couldn't stand the thought of someone spending any holiday alone.
Ed took special pride in having served two tours of duty and, in later years, was rarely seen without his Navy cap. He was known to shed tears at parades and Veterans Day ceremonies, and he was very grateful to be able to visit the WWII Memorial in Washington DC on a Stars & Stripes Honor Flight. Before he became ill, he volunteered for Meals on Wheels and Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Sheboygan County.
Ed is survived by his wife Lou, his daughters Loretta of St. Petersburg, FL and Nanette (Hans Kuhn) of rural Elkhart Lake, four grandchildren, Heather Brenner, Shane Gillis, John Kuhn and Simone Bulebosh, four great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Reilly and Zebediah Brenner, and Alexander Gillis, a sister, Betty DeFloria in Harrisburg, PA, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, one sister, and one daughter, Alice Kristine Gillis.
Following Ed's wishes, cremation has taken place. Private family services will be held later this month.
In lieu of flowers, friends are invited to donate to Lou's overseas charity, We the Children Fund.
