Robert James Bergin, Sr., of Sierra Vista, Ariz., passed away in his home on January 11, 2014, from complications of nephrotic syndrome.

He was born on Nov. 27, 1939, to Carl T. Bergin and Lucille (Dippel) Heider. Bob grew up in Plymouth, Wis. He graduated top of his class in 1957 at Plymouth High School. He joined the Air Force upon his graduation and served for four years. He later joined the Air Force Reserves as a loadmaster on C-130s, flying out of General Billy Mitchell Field, Milwaukee, Wis. He received many awards and medals throughout his 35 combined years in the Air Force. His highest award received was the Presidential Citation due to his bravery and duress under fire. Most of his Reserve time was spent working with Special Forces and paratroopers. Bob married Jean (Zawatzke) Bergin on June 30, 1962, in Sheboygan, Wis. They were happily married for 51 years. They had four children, Susan (Galen) Vincent, Lake Villa, Ill.; Robbie Bergin, Sierra Vista; Joseph (Katja) Bergin, Apple Valley, Calif.; and Robert (Michelle) Bergin, Jr., Sierra Vista. Bob's greatest joy was time spent with his family.

Bob was employed with Wisconsin Public Service for over 30 years. Most of his years with the company were spent as a licensed nuclear operator, at The Kewaunee Nuclear Power Plant.

Bob is survived by his wife, four children, ten grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and the following siblings, Roger (Carol) Bergin, Plymouth, Wis.; Ralph Bergin, Sheboygan, Wis.; Roseann Spradau, The Villages, Fla.; Reuben Bergin, Thief River Falls, Minn.; Ricky (Gloria) Bergin, Minot, N.D.; and Rita (Paul) Keranen, Tecumseh, Kan.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Carl T. Bergin and Lucille (Dippel) Heider; and two brothers, Romaine and Ronald.

Following cremation at the Hatfield Funeral Home, Sierra Vista, Bob was laid to rest in the Columbarium at the Southern Arizona Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Sierra Vista, with a military honor guard ceremony.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to Casa De La Paz Hospice. They were extremely helpful in providing services with the utmost care, dignity and respect.
