Joan Rhodes Obituary

Joan Shepherd Rhodes

Joan Shepherd Rhodes

Bossier City, LA - Funeral services for Joan S. Rhodes will be 11:00 AM, Tuesday, January 19, 2013 at Cypress Baptist Church, Benton, LA.

The family will receive friends between 4:00 and 7:00 PM, Monday, January 18, 2013 at Boone Funeral Home, Bossier Chapel.

Joan was born January 12, 1935 in Brownfield, Texas and went to meet her Savior on February 17, 2013 surrounded by her family. Joan's children used two words to describe their mother, "An Angel". She was known for her loving ways and devotion to her church. She was a charter member of Cypress Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir for many years. Later she worked and retired from the Youth Department, and loved her fellowship with the "Fly Girls".

Preceding Joan in death was her husband of 51 years, F.A. "Sonny" Rhodes, Jr.; parents, Otha O. Shepherd and Avris Davis Shepherd; and brother, Ronald O. Shepherd. She is survived by four children, Fran Rhodes Coker and husband Bruce, Robin Rhodes, Dusty Rhodes, and wife Teri and Randy Rhodes and wife, Joy. She was "Nena" to nine grandchildren, Kristi Walton, Kami Buchanan, Brandi Ellard, Brynn Hamburger, Brooke Burkmier, Travis Coker, Jacob Rhodes, Matthew Rhodes, and Hannah Rhodes, and seven great-grandchildren, Brianna, Laurynn, Brayden, Emerson Kate, Casen, Cael, and Lincoln; and two sisters, Betty Beauregard and Ruth Pilkinton.

Even Alzheimer's, after it had taken control, did not take away Mama's Christian and sweet-natured character, which was a true inspiration to her family and everyone who knew her. The family would like to thank her daughters-in-law, Teri and Joy Rhodes for their loving care.

We were blessed to have you as our Mama.

When ever I think of Mrs. Rhodes as I called her, Joy always comes to mind. She always had a smile on her face and a kind word. Words won't ease her passing, but knowing she is walking on streets of gold and serving her Lord as she did her on earth and that if we follow her path we will see her again. She will be missed and it was my pleasure to have known her.

Dear Fran and family,

I am so sorry to hear about the death of your mother. It seems like yesterday we were kids and both our mothers sang in the choir at First Baptist Church in Benton. My how the time passes so quickly. Please look to God for the grace to carry you through. Now they are singing in the greatest choir of all.
