Rodney Duron Obituary

Pastor Rodney Duron

Pastor Rodney Duron, 88, of Shreveport, Louisiana, went home to be with the Lord on March 16, 2013, at his home in the arms of his loving wife. He was born April 19, 1924 in Hackberry, Louisiana to Marie Eva Breaux Doiron and Louis Doiron.

A dynamic young preacher, Rodney Duron and wife Frances, came to Shreveport, Louisiana in 1958, and agreed to take the senior pastorate at then First Assembly of God in Cedar Grove. Since that time, the congregation has grown from 50 to over 3,000 members and has relocated three times to accommodate the growth. Pastor Duron's vision for Christian education was made a reality in Evangel Christian Academy and its thousands of alumni since 1982. He is most known for the love he showed everyone he met and especially for his faithfulness to pray for any need at any time. Pastor Duron will be remembered as a man who faithfully walked the hallways of hospitals and brought hope to hopeless situations and peace in moments of mourning. He was a pastor to everyone, not just those in his congregation. Most of all, he loved Jesus more than life. His example has inspired many to follow Christ.

Pastor Duron was welcomed into heaven by his parents and twelve siblings as well as countless others who were impacted by his ministry of over 70 years. His legacy continues with his adoring wife, Frances Duron, his son Denny Duron and wife DeAnza, his seven grandchildren, Destiny Deas and husband Phillip, DawnChere Wilkerson and husband Rich, Denny Rodney Duron, Dez Duron, David Dee Duron, Dakota Duron, and Lucas London, one great-grandchild, Carolina Lee Deas, his nephew Casey Elledge who lived with him as a son from the time he was twelve, wife Beki, and his niece Stacy Richard, two grand nephews, three grand nieces, and one great niece. He is survived by numerous additional nieces and nephews, many of whom are in full time ministry, and by more friends and adopted sons and daughters than can be counted.

Visitation will be Monday, March 18, 2013 at 5:00pm at Shreveport Community Church, 5720 Buncombe Rd., Shreveport, Louisiana.

A celebration of Pastor Duron's life will be held at Tuesday, March 19, 4:00pm at Shreveport Community Church, 5720 Buncombe Rd., Shreveport, Louisiana, Rev. Denny Duron and Dr. Casey Elledge officiating. The graveside service will be a family only service.

Pallbearers will be Denny Rodney Duron, Dez Duron, David Dee Duron, Dakota Duron, Lucas London, Rich Wilkerson, Jr., and Phillip Deas.

Honorary pallbearers will include the deacons of Shreveport Community Church (past and present), pastoral staff of Shreveport Community Church, Rusty Reeves, James Randolph, Dan Newman, David Logan, Charles Logan, Bill Gordon and Kenneth Elledge.

Special thanks to the pastoral staff of Community Church, Shreveport and Northpoint, Nettie Cooper, Sister Della Randolph, James Randolph and a host of others who have served and honored Pastor Duron through the years.

Pastor Rodney Duron's message to the world still holds true, "To God Be The Glory" and "The Best is Yet to Come."

Just read of Brother Duron's passing from this life to his home in heaven. No words can express my love for him. I was a young girl when I first met him and his family. Eighteen I think. I spent lots of time in church and their home. Such love of God, family and others was unmatched. My heart warms when I think of him. I moved away and visited some for a few years but had not seen him for about 15 years. He showed me what a Godly man was. Enjoy heaven my sweet, gentle Pastor. As I was surfing the web I was sadden to hear about Pastor Duron had passed. My children & I went to the church when my husb was stationed @ Barksdale AFB in 87-94. I always say that my Papa was a walking Jesus, however I felt the same for Pastor Duron. I had never forgot the church & how the Duron family was a blessing to our family. I know that Pastor Duron was so welcomed in Heaven. May the Lord bless your family!

Words are so inadequate to convey what "Pop" and "Mom" have meant to Linda and I. One thing I know - there is shouting in Heaven because a "saint has come home". Thanks, Pop, for loving us more than man's tradition. Love Dave and Linda Edwards

I have many wonderful memories of First Assembly and being in the Duron's home. Years after leaving Shreveport, I "happened" to run into Bro Duron at a hospital. My father was in ICU after being airlifted in after a bad wreck. What a sense of relief to see that familiar face! And even better, to see the improvement in my father after Bro Duron prayed for him! What a sweet, faithful servant of our most High God! He will be missed by many! My prayers go out to all the family!

Bro. Duron will always hold a very special place in my heart. He was a wonderful example of a pastor faithfully caring for his church. I saw Bro. Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

I remember as a young girl Papa D & Sis D coming to Springhill First AG for revivals and singing & preaching. They were such annointed services and I was awed and inspired. Later, as a young adult, I attended the church and was mentored under your pastorate and as a friend in your home. Bro. D was a humble man and had a special way of loving people. People would do anything for the Durons as they appreciated & respected them so much. Both John & I received great leadership direction under you and we are using those skills today in the Royal Ranger Ministry. Thank you and God bless. Sorry I cannot be there with you now but my heart is there.

Pastor Duron was always my pastor even though my family and I have been engaged in ministry for 45+ years. Pastor Duron was responsible for providing a sure ministry foundation through Bible training and example. Many people who knew Pastor Duron and knew I sat under his ministry have said that I preach much like Pastor Duron. I count that as one of the greatest complements of my life. Pasotr Duron was always there for me and my family. We will never forget him, nor the Lord he lovingly served. Brother Duron you are missed, but not forgotten. One day I plan to join you in that place that Jesus has prepared for us. Thank you for loving me.

I had the pleasure of talking to Pastor Rodney Duron for over 30 minutes one evening while we were leaning over the fence at an Evangel football game. Iv'e never enjoyed a conversation more as he talked about the Lord, life, and his minor league baseball days. He was truly a modern day 'David' and will be greatly missed. Pastors Rodney and Denny have both had a tremondous influence in my life. I love the Durons !!!

There is an old song that says "Strike up the band, sound the chorus, a soldier's coming home". I can imagine the heavenly choir singing that as Bro. Duron entered those pearly gates. I am so thankful that I had the honor and priviledge to have this man of God as my pastor for many years. Sis. Duron, Denny & family I love you!

This Man of God's obituary has been an inspiration to live up to. Although I do not know Pastor Duron, I pray for the family, friends and lay members of His church. I also have a son who pastors a church in Shreveport. As Rev. Duron always says "To God Be The Glory" at this glorious homegoing.

March 18, 2013

Sis Duron, Denny and DeAnza, words cannot express the feelings I have at this time for the home going of Pastor Duron. I had the honor of serving under this Godly Man and his family for a few years. The love that Pastor showed to ALL who came through the doors of First Assembly/SCC over the years is still evident today. His devotion to the Lord Jesus was an inspiration as well as a learning experience for a young minister of the gospel. I will never forget my first Spirit-filled pastor. My heart and soul hurts and yet rejoices. The victory has been attained for Pastor. I pray the Holy Spirit will comfort the family.

Pastor Rodney Duron has influenced my life by his truthful preaching of the Word of God and by living his life as an example to us all. He will always live on in my memory and in my heart. Sister Duron, Denny, DeAnza, and all the kids -- my prayers and love are with you now and forever. No words can express the bittersweetness I feel right now. I'm sad for all of us who have had the most wonderful privilege of knowing and loving Brother Duron. My heart breaks for each of you, but at the same time I can't help but rejoice because Brother D is exactly where he always wanted to be. No one will ever be able to take his place in our lives. He was the most amazing Pastor and Man of God I have ever known. It's been 40 years since I started going to First Assembly, and I'm so grateful God led me to the First Assembly/SCC family. Even though God has lead me to another church, I'm like a teenager who has grown up and moved out of mom and dad's house, but mom and dad's house is always "home". That's how SCC and the Durons will always be for me. I love you all so very, very much.
