Retired from Westwood Chemical, taught high school chemistry and physics; loving husband, father and grandfather
Robert John Dougherty 78 of Lake Como passed away at Jersey Shore Medical Center on January 6, 2021 after a month long battle with COVID-19.
Robert was born on Staten Island, NY, and lived in Monmouth County since 1972. After many years in Matawan, he and his wife, Jerelyn moved to Lake Como in 2009, where he became very active in St. Catharine's Parish as a Eucharistic Minister, a leader in Bible Study groups, a member of St. Vincent DePaul Society, Cornerstone, and "That Man Is You". He also was a member of the Elks Club. He was an avid fan of Notre Dame football, and in his younger days enjoyed playing baseball and basketball.
Bob was the kindest man you could know, always willing to help those in need. His generosity, compassion, patience, humility, faithfulness, and his wonderful sense of humor account for his many friends. He was a wonderful model for his four children and thirteen grandchildren.
Robert graduated from St. Peter's Boys HS on Staten Island and St. Peter's College in Jersey City with a BS in Chemistry. After teaching 2 years at New Dorp High School, Staten Island, be began a long career in the chemical industry. After retiring from Westwood Chemical, he returned to a career teaching chemistry and physics at Red Bank Catholic, Matawan HS and Freehold Regional HS.
Robert is survived by his loving wife, Jerelyn Marie Sklenar Dougherty, his 4 children, Julia Crowley and her husband, Tom of East Quogue, NY, Jennifer Keegan and her husband, Patrick of Spring Lake Heights, Rachel Hendricks and her husband, Edward of Brielle and Daniel Dougherty of Pt. Pleasant; 13 grandchildren: Kelly, Anna, Jack, PJ, Timmy, Sarah, RJ, Mary Rose, Henry, Lily, Aidan, Conall, and Finn. He is also survived by his older brothers, Paul Dougherty, George Dougherty and his wife, Susan, and many loving cousins, nieces and nephews.
A private Funeral Mass will be held at St. Catharine's Church in Spring Lake on Thursday, 14th at 10:30 am. O'Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township is in charge of arrangements. Due to the COVID pandemic, there will be no public viewing and Funeral Mass will be streamed live on St. Catharine's Website.
