Walter John Drake, 75
Former truck mechanic and driver, race car driver
Walter John Drake, 75, of Aberdeen, N.J., passed away Sunday, Feb. 4, 2018, at home.
Born in Staten Island, N.Y., he resided there prior to moving and settling in Aberdeen in 1999. He graduated from McKee Vocational High School in Staten Island.
Walter worked as a truck mechanic and truck driver for Staten Material, Staten Island, and then was a truck mechanic for First Student Bus Company, Morganville, N.J. He drove a racecar at Weissglass Speedway, Staten Island and Old Bridge Speedway, Englishtown, N.J. He was also the crew chief for his daughter, Wendy, at Wall Stadium, Wall Township, N.J. He was a member of the Machinist Union. Walter served his country in the U.S. Army during Vietnam.
Walter was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Deborah (Thompson) Drake Jr. He is survived by his beloved wife, Emily "Menay" (Decker) Drake; his loving children, Walter J. Drake Jr. of Aberdeen; Menay A. Orcuilo and husband, Thomas, of Staten Island; Wendy B. Drake-Schneider and husband, Ken, of Little Falls, N.J.; and adopted children, Maranda Drake and Jacob Drake, both of Aberdeen; a dear sister, Joan Thorson of Staten Island; a dear brother-in-law, Jay Jensen of Florida; a close friend, Tonie Holder of Matawan, N.J.; and 11 cherished grandchildren. He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his family and friends.
Visitation will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2018, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., at Day Funeral Home, 361 Maple Pl., Keyport, N.J. 07735, and Thursday, Feb. 8, 2018, 10 a.m., at the funeral home, with an 11 a.m. service at Christ Church, 90 Kings Highway, Middletown, N.J. 07748.
