A Classmate Like a Brother
To those who knew him, Capt. Charles F. Burlingame's dependability was legend. "He was kind of a go-to guy," said Perry Martini, a former classmate of Captain Burlingame, a Navy fighter pilot many affectionately remember by his nickname, Chic. "If you needed something done and done right," Mr. Martini said, "you would call on Chic."

As a pilot, Mr. Burlingame, 51, captain of American Airlines Flight 77, was a perfectionist, and his attention to safety earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues. But Captain Burlingame's most valued quality, friends say, was his commitment to people. He personified the word classmate, Mr. Martini said, and as such, "he became family."

A graduate of the Naval Academy and the Navy's Top Gun fighter pilot school in Miramar, Calif., Mr. Burlingame accepted a position 12 years ago with American Airlines, where his wife, Shari, is a flight attendant.

He was to attend his 30-year college reunion, which he helped organize, the week after the attacks. Instead, former classmates from as far as Hong Kong gathered to honor their fallen brother, take in a Navy football game and reminisce.

"If Chic were around this weekend," Mr. Martini said, "he would be doing a lot of high-fives and hugs."

Thank you for your service, sir. He sounds like he was a terrific, kind, and caring man. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of his family and friends who still mourn this loss. We will never forget. And consider yourselves virtually hugged from me, in honor of Charles, since it sounds like he was a hugger. :)

I met Chic several years ago through my sister who was a flight attendance with AA. I remember Chic as being a sweet and friendly man, and one who valued friendships. He was a trumpet player and had his music stand and trumpet prominently displayed so proudly on the platform above the living room. With all Chic's gifts and talents, he never once tried to flaunt it. All these years after such a terribly tragedy, he is still greatly missed by so many.

To The Family,
I did not have the pleasure of meeting Captain Charles F. Burlingame but I truly am saddened by his and all the other victims' death of the WTC attacks. How we all long for the day when, as the Bible says,' righteous dead ones will come back to life with the opportunity of living forever in paradise.' I am so sorry for your loss. God bless you.

Sincerely,
Mr. Terry of NC

When I picked up the Washington Post one day after the weeks of Sept 11th, I discovered that Capt Burlingame would not be buried at Arlington due to some stupid regulation. I quickly wrote my Congressman and he wrote me back and told me that he in addition to many others objected and the Pentagon and Arl Cemetery relented and The man got his own burial space at Arlington. I still have this letter and am glad I wrote to get this accomplished. May the family know I am a retired private in the Army and served under Reagan.
I think this is all I could ever do for my country, and may he now rest in peace. I see from reading the other tributes, he was a great aviator.
He is not forgotten.

On this 10th anniversary of 9/11 I wanted to take the time out to pay tribute to Chic and all of the other great Americans that we lost on that horrific day. I knew Chic back in the 70's as a fun, single Navy pilot in Va Beach. He had many friends and I can still remember like yesterday, his handsome and always cheerful, smiling face. Even back in those "beach scene" days when we were all young and single, many of us, a bit wild and crazy, Chic was always well grounded and admired and a true "officer and gentleman".

My condolences to you and all your family on Mr Burlingame. I was severing with VF-103 76-79. I was a flight deck troubleshooter and launched Mr B many times. I asked him once what he liked the best about the launch . He told me that the feeling he got once I hit the cat extend and he lit the burners. He said the way the plane shook waitng to get launched was a thrill everytime He was a good pilot . he most always caught the #3 wire ,never blew a main mount on landing and had few gripes on his bird after recovery. Always thought highly of as the DIV officer. I'm proud to have served with him and will miss him greatly. AMH3 Hughes
