Scouting Hockey Talent
Mark Bavis, a hockey scout, was on his way to work on Sept. 11, flying west for the Los Angeles Kings training camp, where he would be checking on the progress of players the team had drafted on his advice. He took United Airlines Flight 175 from Boston.

Mr. Bavis, 32, had starred for the Boston University Terriers from 1990 to 1993. He was "a great defensive forward and a real smart playmaker," said his coach, Jack Parker.

The coach used Mark and his twin brother, Mike, as a team to kill penalties. "The Bavi, we called them," Mr. Parker said. "They were always together."

Mike Bavis, an assistant to Mr. Parker, agreed. "We were very close," he said. "But we were competitive."

The scouting job, after a few years in minor league hockey and turns as assistant coach at Brown and Harvard, delighted his brother because of the travel it involved. "He really enjoyed some of the finer places in our country and loved to have a good time," his brother said.

I was a kid when I met Mark and Mike when they were playing hockey in Charleston. I remember the day I met him, he signed my Stingrays team poster. He was so gracious and nice. He made a 13 yo girl feel special. I will forever remember Mark. I think of him every year when 9/11 comes around. May God bless Marks family! He will always be remembered in our hearts!

Another year has passed, and just like last year, you remain in my thoughts every day and are missed just as much today as you were last year. We have a new song this year, specially dedicated to you and all the others from that day and the aftermath, I wish you could have heard it, though he said he knew when he wrote it that you would never be able to come home again, despite the words in the song. I think you heard it though, and hope you liked it. All my love.

Think of Mark and all of the other who tragically lost their lives on 9/11. One thing I always take from the last time Mark and I saw each other was parting with a "I'll see you when I see you". Goodbye have never been the same for me - it was an honor to know you as a colleague and a friend.

Thinking of you -- My thoughts are with your family

September 10, 2011

Ten years have past, and at times it can seem only like yesterday, especially with the media  - but more often the memories.  It has been a decade since that fateful day which changed the landscape of not only downtown Manhattan, but to some degree our culture.

Not a time to delve into all of that, suffice it to say that I'm sure that I speak for many of your former colleagues when I say - we miss you, and think about you often - which is a testament to the influence who you had on those who had the good fortune of calling you, Mark, a friend.  I count myself the lucky one to have not only have had the opportunity to work and coach alongside you, but to have called you a good friend.

I still remember our last conversation the day before - and heeded your words, although only to a point (lol) - because thist great game is also something that allowed all of us who worked with you  to ever have met you.  Endeavour Sports Group w ill continue to support the Mark Bavis Leadership Foundation in your honour, all with great pride and respect...

You are always in our hearts,

Mike and Deb Pilon

I am a SC Stingrays fan. I never knew Mark or Mike personally. I always think of the Bavis family when someone mentions 9/11. I am still praying for you all.
September 18, 2010
I knew the Bavis's from Roslindale. I grew up with Patrick and his older brothers in the 60s and early 70s. Something compelled me to look up their name tonight - I am not sure what. I discovered for the first time that they had lost a boloved son and brother on the Day and for that I am deeply saddened by their loss. I worked in NY and was there on the Day. We all used to play street hockey and I tell people to this day that it was the time of my life playing on the streets. I also went to BU. I reach my hand out and give a strong shake to the Bavis family. God Bless as Mark is in a better place.

To Bavis family.
May the God of all comfort, bring comfort to the family and freinds of Mark. we can all look forward to the time when every one in God's memory will rise and death will be no more because God promises that the former things like death will pass away. Please accept my deepest condolonces. It is so good that Mark had the opportunity to live to that age because the scriptures say that our days are 70 and if by special mightiness they are 80.(Psalm 90:10) I am sure that you have so many fond memories that will comfort you and bring you joy.

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day

I went to Catholic Memorial with Richie Bavis and followed Mark and Mike's hockey careers at CM and BU. We had our 30 year CM reunion this past May and I thought of Richie at that time. He was a great guy. I remember him running for some student government position and he was a natural leader. Very likeable guy... When we all get to the afterlife, I hope that I can say hi to Richie again and meet Mark. 5 years later and we have not forgotten...
