Larry Groth Obituary

Larry C. Groth

January 25, 1947 - May 24, 2017

SOUTH BEND - Larry Charles Groth, 70, of South Bend, passed away unexpectedly on May 24, 2017 after a hard fought fight at Memorial Hospital. He was with his immediate family who loved him so very much. Larry was born in Paw Paw, Michigan to Kathryn and Walter Groth. Larry graduated from Plainwell High School, received a Bachelors from Western Michigan University, and a Masters from Indiana University South Bend. He was an adored high school math teacher and high school coach in the South Bend School Corporation for over 40 years and a life-long believer in the power of education. Larry met his beloved wife, Penny in 1976 and married her two years later. They had two children, Lauren Groth (Brad Burger) of Boulder, CO and Lindsey Roache (Chris Roache) of Indianapolis, IN. Larry loved to spend time on the elliptical, was an amateur meteorologist, and enjoyed adventurous travel throughout the country, and the world. Larry was a natural athlete, quickly learning and excelling at every sport his daughters took up. Larry loved the outdoors, natural parks, and hiking the Rockies, summiting his first 14er at 66, and his first 13er at 68. His love of running, athletics, and the wonder of the natural world lives on in his wife, his daughters, and his sons-in-law. Larry is survived by his wife, two daughters; mother, Kate; two sisters, Karen (Al) and Pat (Ron); and a brother, Phil (Lunnie), all of whom will miss him immensely. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 3rd, with visitation from 2:00 until 3:00 at Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road, with Rev. Loren Van Oort officiating. In lieu of flowers, please make a blood or financial donation to the South Bend Medical Foundation Blood Donor Services, 530 N. Lafayette Blvd., South Bend, IN 46601 or a donation to the National Parks Foundation, 1110 Vermont Ave. NW, Suite 200, Washington DC 20005, in Larry's memory. I am so very sorry to hear about your loss. I am sending love and support to you and your family. I feel very blessed to have known your dad and to have been taught by him. I remember him being at soccer practices and I remember how great it felt to simply be in his presence; not many people offer that kinds of energy. I love that you quoted atticus, Atticus Finch is one of my favorite characters of all time and his character reminds me of your dad. He was a powerful soul, who spoke loudly without needing to say a word verbally.
I thought he was in the soccer picture we took, but saw that he wasnt, thats why I added the pic of the three of you above, with his arms around you both. Thats how I remember your dad, a powerful leader who was loving and protective of all around him. I know he will continue fulfilling his role from beyond. Love to you all! xo

Larry was a colleague of mine and my father, Harry Lewandowski, who passed away in 2015. We both enjoyed our time with Larry as we were quite a LaSalle family. My sincere sympathy to his wife and children...what a great loss way too soon.

I'm very sorry to hear about Mr. Groth and my thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
He was my algebra/trig teacher at LaSalle and the person to encourage me to go to a Women in Engineering week at what would become my College Alma Mater. He was a great teacher and a great man that cared about his students.
