I still miss him so much. There are so many times that I wish I could talk with him and get his advice. I have a flower that he picked for me. It is a treasure box, dried out but still beautiful.

Leon and I were distant cousins. I call him Leon because when he first contact me, he only introduced himself as my cousin, Leon, and that we were cousins through our common Guth families. He was an excellent genealogist. Through the Internet, we conversed about our common ancestry, two Catholic brothers that lived in Ottenbach, Switzerland. During the Protestant Reformation, my ancestor brother left the Catholic faith, was kicked out of Switzerland, moved to Germany, and then to Pennsylvania where religious freedom was permitted. I am from the same place where my ancestors settled in the 1700s. Leon's ancestor brother did not leave the Catholic faith. Leon's ancestors eventually came to America, too. Leon and I lost contact with each other. During that intervening time, Leon retired, and I converted to Catholicism. As I continued working on our common ancestry, I had questions for Leon, so having lost his email address, I searched for him on Google. I was surprised to find out not only that he was Catholic, but he was a priest. I finally contacted Father Leon and we had a nice email reunion. I told him of my conversion and planned to tell him my story. Time passed. I've been watching the TV series, A Season With Notre Dame Football. I decided to contact Father Leon today and found out he had passed. I feel a profound sense of loss. Father Leon and we're not close relatives, 11th cousins. And we had not stayed in close contact with each other. But I feel like I've lost a close relative and friend. God bless you, Father Leon.

Rev.

Mert was our rector at Lyons Hall for it's last two years, 1972-1974, before being transferred to the women of Notre Dame. We tested him in many ways, but he always treated us with respect and his warm, engaging smile. Enjoy heaven, Mert.
