Thomas M. Ryan MD passed away early the morning of August 4, 2018 at Riverview Care Center. Tom was born in Oakland, CA. He was the first of eight children born to Mary Ann and Dr. Bernard F Ryan. Growing up in Alameda, California he attended St. Joseph's High School and graduated from Alameda High School in 1957. Tom was a proud Zag and graduated in 1961 with a B.A. degree. He attended the University of Washington School of Medicine graduating in 1965. A Rotating Internship took him to Highland-Alameda County Hospital in Oakland, California and then to a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Dermatology at the University of Oregon Medical School. Wanting to serve his country, Tom joined the U.S. Navy. He served in Vietnam from 1967-1969 as a flight surgeon obtaining the rank of Lt. Col. After Vietnam, he completed his residency at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, Department of Dermatology in Rochester, MN following in his father's footsteps. In 1972, Dr. Thomas M. Ryan opened Spokane Valley Dermatology on East Sprague next to his brother John's pediatric dental office. In 2011, after closing his private practice and not enjoying his 48 hours of retirement, he joined Advanced Dermatology and Skin Surgery practicing until the end of 2014. During his professional career, he served as Vice President and then President of the Washington State Dermatology Association, Board of Directors Washington State American Association of Physicians & Surgeons, Board of Directors Mayo Clinic- O'Leary Board, and a member of the Doctors Mayo Society. Tom was a proud supporter of the NRA, a life member of the National Sporting Clay's Association, a delegate for Washington State, awarded the Hill-Adams award in 2005 granting him a place in the Hall of Fame for his work with youth shooters. He also served on the board of directors for Morning Star Boy's Ranch for many years. Another of his hobbies was riding motorcycles with his son, brothers and friends to Sturgis, Canada and Mexico. Fly fishing became one of his passions later in life. Tom wore many hats with pride and never met a stranger. Thomas is survived by his wife of 29 years, Susan, children: Zoe Allison Ryan, Michael Ryan, David Ryan, Nancy (Josh) Glick, stepchildren: Stephanie Hudson, Brian Hudson (Lindsay), grandchildren: Bailey Ryan, Corbin Ryan, Suede Ryan, Alexander Hudson, Benjamin Hudson, mother, Mary Ann Ryan, brothers Patrick (Kathleen) and Bernard Ryan (Mary), sisters: Kathy Gould (Bud), Suzanne Nevers (John) and Jeanne Ryan, former wife Sara, numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and close friends. Preceded in death by his father Bernard F. Ryan, MD, and brother John B. Ryan, DDS. The family would like to thank the paramedics of Fire District 8 for their kindness during his last few months and to Riverview Care Center for their compassion. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 18, 2018 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 330 E. Boone Avenue on the Gonzaga Campus with a reception at Cataldo Hall following. Interment will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace, 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Tom's name to Morning Star Boys' Ranch, PO Box 8087, Spokane, WA 99203; or to Mayo Clinic Department of Development, Dermatology, 200 First St. SW, Rochester, MN 55905.

Growing up in Alameda, I had a crush on Tom. I got to know him and cared a lot about him. It is with a deep deep sadness that I read that he has passed away. He was a very special person in my life.... and I never forgot about him. He was a forever special friend... and I am very sad he has passed away. Please contact me, Suzanne Nevers....
