William COON Obituary


News Death Notice

COON, William Hobert 88, of Springfield, passed away November 18. He was born June 25, 1924 in Pitchin, OH, to the late William F. and Helen M. (Ford) Coon. As a young boy, he helped his dad do odd jobs such as painting houses, repairing roofs, wall papering, etc. to earn money during the depression years. As a young man, he worked on many of the farms in the Pitchin area. A veteran of WWII, he entered the Navy in 1945 and spent eight weeks of boot camp at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center and an additional eight weeks there after qualifying for machinist's school. He was stationed upon the USS Chincoteague at Okinawa and at Tsingtao, China, between October 1945 and 1946. After honorable discharge from the Navy, he worked as a carpenter for several years and then as a machinist. He worked for 36 years at Dresser Industries/Airtool until his retirement in 1991. His favorite hobbies were woodworking, reading, crossword puzzles, and gardening; and he truly enjoyed spending time with his family. In addition to his parents; he was preceded in death by his sister Nina (Coon) Artz and brother Larry Coon. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Jean (Brown) Coon; son Neal H. Coon, daughter Lisa J. (John) Loukoumidis; grandchildren Darren T. Wagner II, William R. Wagner, all of Springfield; Heather (Philip) Lehner; great-grandchildren Neveah and Lelan Lehner of California, brothers Kenneth (Rosie) Coon of St.Paris, OH; Willard "Bill" (Pat) Coon of Toms River, NJ; sister-in-law Faye Coon of Pitchin; brother-in-law Michael (Patti) Brown of Mechanicsburg, PA; and sister-in-law Patty (Charles) Lackey of Chambersburg, PA; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will begin at 11 am until the time of the funeral service at 1 pm Friday, November 23 in the Jackson Lytle Lewis Life Celebration Center, 2425 N. Limestone St., Springfield with his nephew Pastor Dan Brown officiating. Condolences may be forwarded to the family by visiting www.jacksonlytle.com
