Margaret McGregor Smith
Nov. 22, 1935 - Mar. 8, 2018
Margaret McGregor Smith (Ginger) born November 22 1935 Brockton Massachusetts died March 8, 2018, quietly in her home at The Woodlands, Lebanon, New Hampshire.
Ginger was raised in Brockton Massachusetts and attended Brockton schools and later the Thayer Academy Prep School in Braintree, Ma.
Desperately interested in nursing, her mother, Margaret Perkins McGregor and father, Alexander McGregor, eventually allowed her to attend Mary Hitchcock hospital in Hanover, New Hampshire because it was located next to Dartmouth College and they had heard that nurses occasionally married Dartmouth students.
She did meet and marry a Dartmouth student, Wendell Murray Smith, of Maplewood, NJ, which resulted in a glorious 62 year marriage and they produced a dynamic family of five daughters, Karen Wilson of Proctorsville, VT. Wendy Berge of Norwalk CT., Kimberley Quirk, of Enfield, NH, Kathryn Oakford of Charleston SC, and Jennifer Pacelli, of Trumbull CT.
They spent the next 30 years in the vibrant world of Bridgeport, Stamford and Rowayton, CT as well as many wonderful years in Bermuda. Paddle tennis at the Stamford Yacht club was one of Ginger's interests and she went on to win club and city championships. She also enjoyed golf, especially at the Mid Ocean Club in Bermuda.
Ginger's bright spirit, her interest in children, music, sports and her church was the perfect background for raising five daughters. She played piano with the "Fat Finger Five" Dixieland band and sang as a tenor in the church choir at the First United Methodist Church in Stamford, Ct. She has been most recently an active member and a Deacon of the First Congregational Church in Lebanon, NH.
Ginger was predeceased by three sisters, Diane, Jean and Jane. She is survived by her husband, Wendell Smith, her five daughters and their husbands, Karen and Jared Wilson, Wendy and Jim Berge, Kim Quirk and Dick DuMez, Kathy and Bill Oakford, Jennifer and Rick Pacelli; ten grandchildren, Courtney Wilson, Alison Berge, James Berge, Anna Berge, Lincoln Quirk, Morgan Quirk, Alexander Oakford, Abigail Oakford, Eric Pacelli and Kevin Pacelli; and one great grandson: Malcolm Oakford.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the First Congregational Church of Lebanon PO Box 230, Lebanon, NH 03766 would be appreciated. Services will be held at the First Congregational Church on March 24 at 2 p.m.
