Adriana Stolte-Gerard
Honored family physician; delivered more than 2,000 babies
Adriana Stolte-Gerard (Dr. Stolte) passed away peacefully at home on June 9, 2020, at the age of 95. She was born in Taranto, Italy on Aug. 30, 1924, to Ida Guida and Attilio Preti.
She grew up in Taranto, and moved with her family to Naples, Italy, when she was approximately 15 years old. Later she attended the University of Naples Medical School. She experienced the hardship of World War II in Italy. This included a period of over three weeks in hiding with her family from the Nazis in the Engineering Institute where her father was the director.
In 1944, she met Lt. Joseph T. Stolte, a U.S. Air Force fighter pilot stationed near Naples at the time. She came to the U.S. in June of 1947, and married Joseph later that same year. She returned to Italy to continue attending the University of Naples Medical School, graduating as a medical doctor in 1955.
In 1957, she completed her residency and internship at Jersey Shore Medical Center (Fitkin Memorial Hospital at the time). After successfully completing all State Board Medical Examinations, she started her initial solo practice in Point Pleasant Borough, N.J., in 1957.
She thoroughly enjoyed her profession as a family medical doctor. She delivered more than 2,000 babies and made house-calls long after it was no longer "in vogue" to visit patients at home. She knew her patients well and sincerely cared for them, sometimes caring for a patient herself when the patient's own family could not.
In 1984, she was honored by the March of Dimes Foundation, receiving the Virginia Apgar Woman of the Year Award. The following year she was recognized again and awarded the Americanism Medal by the New Jersey Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
In 1986, her husband of 38 years, Joseph Stolte, passed away.
In 1988, she married Major Gen. Francis R. Gerard, a decorated Air Force fighter pilot. Although she was still working as a doctor, and Gen. Gerard was the adjutant general of New Jersey, they still managed to travel and spend many good times together.
In 1990, she sold her medical practice, and Gen. Gerard retired from the military. She continued working for the next five years with Dr. Michael Doyle, MD. Next she joined Monmouth Medical Total Healthcare Association, in Eatontown, N.J., as medical director. Doctor Stolte worked from 1997 until April 2016, with Monmouth Total Healthcare, fully retiring at age 91.
Dr. Stolte cared for many people, opening her home and allowing several to live there for years including her aunt, her in-laws, and two friends of the family. She also took complete care of both her brother and her second husband in their final years. She was the primary (and usually the only) caretaker for both, allowing them to pass away peacefully at her home. What is most notable is that she was able to lovingly and medically care for her brother at the age of 79, and her husband at the age of 84.
She was predeceased by her two brothers, Dr. Roberto Preti and Dr. Aldo Preti. She is survived by her three sons: Aldo J. Stolte, Robert T. Stolte and Luca A. Stolte; her four stepchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be held on at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 7, at St. Martha's Church in Pt. Pleasant Borough. A committal service at St. Catherine's Cemetery in Sea Girt (Wall Twp.) will be held immediately after the Mass, followed by an informal observance at Graziano's Restaurant in Point Pleasant Borough.

I adore Dr. Stolte. She was our family Doctor for years and delivered 2 of my children. She was the one who encouraged me to get a job at the hospital across the street from her office. Because of that I was blessed to have worked at Point Hospital and OMC for over 40 years..just recently retired. She was a gift from God to us here in Point Pleasant. RIP dear sweet Lady...Thank YOU
for all You did for our entire family...The Brown Family, Pat, Janine, Debi, Michelle and Lori.

DR. Stolte was my family's doctor in 1958. She made a house call to our home on Parkway, me knowing I was going to get a needle I was hiding under the bed. My mother and sister could not coax me out but she did !!. I was 8 years old. She delivered all 3 of our children who all have children of their own. She was well loved in town and will be greatly missed.God bless her.
