Albert John Dobrosky
Longtime Maplewood optician, proud great-grandfather
Albert John Dobrosky, age 92, of Maplewood, N.J., and Sea Girt, N.J., died on July 30, 2020, surrounded by his family at his residence at the shore.
Born as Bella Dobrovodsky in Gutenberg, N.J., on May 12, 1928, he was then raised in Passaic, N.J. Predeceased by his parents, Gaspar and Mary Dobrovodsky; his sisters, Margaret Chiricco and Amelia Dobrovodsky, and his wife, Dolores nee Baron (dec. 1990).
Albert, known to many as "Whitey," was an optician in Maplewood Village where he ran A.J. Dobrosky Optician for over 50 years. He was a proud member of the Maplewood Lions Association and a communicant of Saint Joseph's Catholic Parish in Maplewood and Saint Catharine's Parish in Spring Lake, N.J. He was a loyal supporter of the Maplewood Center and of the Maplewood Police Department. Whitey enjoyed his time in the Army, playing competitive softball up until the age of 75, betting on horses at the racetrack, and holding "court" in his store at the corner of Baker and Maplewood Avenue with his local friends. Whitey and his late wife, Dolores, built their vacation home in Sea Girt, where they entertained family for more than forty years.
He is survived by his four children, Christina (Robert) Charles, Father John Dobrosky, Dennis (Loretta) Dobrosky, and Catherine (David) Hess. He was a proud grandpa of seven grandchildren, Tara, Ashley, Christine, David, Vanessa, Mark, and Daisy, and a proud great-grandfather of nine great-grandchildren, Carsyn, Charlie, Cruz, Shay, August, Merritt, Hazel, Abigail and Ford.
Funeral services will be private due to Covid-19 restrictions. Entombment will be at St. Catharine's Cemetery in Spring Lake. The family is most appreciative of all personnel from Embracing Hospice Care of Wall, N.J.

We all have such wonderful memories of “Bill” as he was known to our family. He was more than our optician; he was a dear friend. My sons loved going in to see Dr. Dobrosky as he always had a funny story to tell them. One day, my son Michael decided to walk our Doberman into town and visit with Bill. When Michael entered the store with “Emma”, Bill immediately jumped up on a chair and wouldn’t come down until Michael left the store! We all had a good laugh at that one. Even after we moved, my husband and I would always go back and see Bill for all our optical needs. Sometimes he was able to get away and have lunch with us and other times we would bring back lunch and just hangout for awhile. He loved talking about his family. He was so proud of all of you! People were always coming in just to say “hello” to Bill. He was much respected and loved by all and he surely will be missed. We extend our deepest condolences to his family. We hope you can take comfort in knowing that he touched many lives for the better and he made this world a little brighter for being in it.

Sending sympathy and prayers from my family to yours. My parents had been connected to Dennis for decades, and now we continue a treasured friendship. I can see the imagery at St. Catherine's, and know with his son, Father John, presiding, it was a peaceful service. May your grief be filled with joyful memories.

I am proud to be one of "Doc's" daily morning visitors on his corner of Baker Street. I will miss his humor and conversation. He loved shopping at Pick o. Route 22 and we would always compare our purchases. Maplewood has lost a pillar founding father who is irreplaceable. My deepest condolences to his entire family.
