Delia Margiotta Obituary

Delia Marie Margiotta (nee` Fraher) passed away on January 18, 2022, surrounded by her loving family and listening to her favorite music. She was one month shy of her 90th birthday. It was also the 64th Anniversary of the date of her marriage to Stephen Vincent Margiotta, her beloved husband, who himself passed away three weeks ago on December 26, 2021. Delia was a long time resident of Scotch Plains having moved from Bayonne in 1969. Until physical restrictions made it impossible she was a regular communicant of Saint Bartholomew's Church and her spiritual life was key to her. She was born and raised in the Ironbound (Down Neck) section of Newark, New Jersey, to Edward Aloysius and Julia Fraher (nee` Trembicki). After graduating from Eastside High School, Delia worked as a secretary for the Air Force and for the Railway Express Company in Newark. However, it was not until after her marriage that she first got the job she was meant for - being a Mother. Delia gave birth to five children and was later blessed with three grandchildren. With her loving, caring, and reassuring way, her wisdom, her warmth, and her patience, Delia always put her children first. Supporting and nurturing them, and later her grandchildren, was always the most important thing in her life. She was born to be a Mother and a Nana. With a radiant smile and an irresistible positivity, Delia would light up any room and was the person to whom people gravitated. She adored entertaining, conversation, and being with people. Always seeing every glass as half-filled, she found the positive in any situation or person and was never heard to complain or denigrate. Being with Delia was to always feel warm and welcome. She always had time for you. Delia never allowed anything to slow her down including years of rheumatoid arthritis pain. She pursued her love of travel with her immediate family and beloved sisters, Mary Ann and Lorraine, going on many cruises to the Caribbean and Canada, making trips throughout the United States, and visiting Ireland, Italy, England, and France (even making a transatlantic crossing on the Queen Elizabeth 2 with return flight on the Concord). She was a strong believer in higher education, pursuing it herself through ongoing study at Union County College and instilling that belief in her children guiding each of them to college and graduate school degrees. She worked as a substitute teacher in the Scotch Plains Fanwood Public Schools and after going back to school herself to obtain a Paralegal Certificate, worked for several years at a law firm in Westfield, New Jersey. A voracious reader it was common for Delia to read several books each week for most of her long life. She loved the Jersey shore and summers would find her, with family and friends of course, on the beach or at her home in Ocean Beach Shores, New Jersey, taking her kids and grandkids to the boardwalk, batting cages or miniature golf, eating out at the Crab's Claw or Top O' the Mast, or going for Kohr's or homemade ice cream. Believing that experiences were part of learning, she was always eager to try new things like aerobics classes, tennis lessons, and movie symposiums. Delia adored movies and shows and frequently attended plays and concerts, on Broadway and elsewhere, including several Frank Sinatra concerts in Atlantic City, Bruce Springsteen concerts at the Meadowlands, Damn Yankees in the West End, London – and her favorite, Jersey Boys on Broadway. She loved to play roulette and shortly after joining the game would have the entire table engaged in conversation. In any social setting, Delia was at home. Delia's favorite events, naturally, were those involving her children or grandchildren. For every game of baseball, football, basketball, or soccer, for every cheerleading event or dance recital, no matter where or when, she would be there front and center, with her supportive words and encouraging smile. Her presence made you believe that you could do anything and that everything would be all right. Delia is predeceased by her husband Stephen Vincent, her son Steven Mark, her beloved mother Julia Fraher (Padzunas), her father Edward Aloysius Fraher, her step-father Stanley Padzunas, her sister Lorraine Wheeler, her brother-in-law Bruce Wheeler, her brother-in-law Vincent Ramkawsky, her brother in-law Sam Margiotta and Sam's wife Vicki Margiotta, and her brother-in-law Vincent Margiotta. She is survived by her daughter Linda K. Lettera and her son-in-law Frank Lettera, her son Michael and Michael's wife Denise, her son Mark, her son Stephen, her grandson Christopher Lettera, her granddaughters Marlowe Margiotta and Lennon Margiotta, her sister Mary Ann Ramkawsky, her sister-in-law Rosebud Margiotta, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and second cousins. To quote author and professor Leo Buscaglia: "Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around." In living her full and wonderful life, Delia never underestimated the power of these things in her life and in all of the many lives she touched on her journey. Delia's family would like to offer sincere and heartfelt thanks to all of the aides who helped Delia and Steve, and particularly to Janet, Filomena, and Martine, for the loving care and friendship they provided. Due to that care Delia and Steve were able to remain comfortably at home and with their family over their last years. Visitation will be at the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue, Fanwood, New Jersey, on Sunday January 23, 2022 from 1-4 PM and 6-8 PM. A private Mass of Christian Burial, for immediate family, will be celebrated on Monday, January 24, 2022 at 11AM. The Mass can be live-streamed at www.stbartholomewchurch.org. A Mass and Celebration of Life for Delia and Steve is being planned for this spring and the family hopes that all of Delia and Steve's friends and family can attend and safely celebrate together at that time. Details will follow. Memorial Funeral Home 155 South Avenue Fanwood, NJ 07023 908-322-4350
