Marie 'Nettie' Immerso
Longtime Newark resident, elementary teacher and devoted parishioner of St. Lucy's Church, 'valued time with family'
Marie "Nettie" (Zanfini) Immerso died on April 2, 2021 at her home in Brick, NJ. She was 96.
Nettie was born on February 8, 1925, in Newark, NJ.
Her parents, Phil and Sarah (Esposito) Zanfini, were among a small number of Italians of Albanian descent who settled in Newark's First Ward at the beginning of the twentieth century. She attended Barringer High School, then worked in the glove department at Hahne's Department Store while earning a degree at Newark Teachers College. She had a long career as a first-grade teacher at Summer Avenue Elementary School.
A devoted parishioner of Saint Lucy's Church in Newark, Nettie always volunteered at the annual Feast of Saint Gerard. Italian traditions were continued at Nettie's family home at 505 Clifton Avenue, where at Christmas friends came to view the ever-expanding presepio created by family members over several generations.
Nettie treasured friendships from all phases of her life, yet she especially valued time with family: long Sunday dinners at 505, "junkin" for antiques with her sister Flora, ice skating near the boathouse in Branch Brook Park, and summer vacations at Ocean Beach and Lavallette. Nothing, however, topped being "Nanny" to her grandchildren. At heart, Nettie was a caregiver.
Nettie was predeceased by Mickey Immerso, her husband of forty years; her brother, Jerry Zanfini; her sister, Flora Cordileone; and her brother George Zanfini. She is survived by son Michael and his partner Elizabeth; son Paul and his wife Deborah; grandson Daniel and his fiancée Danielle; granddaughter Alexandra; sister-in-law Dorothy; and numerous nephews and nieces.
The Funeral Mass will be on Thursday, April 8, 11 a.m. at Saint Lucy's Church in Newark. Because of Covid, the viewing and burial will be limited to family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 400 Morris Ave., Suite 251, Denville NJ 07834. For more information, log on to www.megaromemorialhome.com

I don't even know where to start... My Sweet Aunt Nettie The love we shared can never be measured. Though I'm filled with sorrow, I know the Table in Heaven is full and complete. The stories from 505 live on --- being told by all the "originals". What a celebration it is. Love to Michael, Elizabeth, Paul, Debbie, Daniel and Alley and all who loves our Sweet Girl. Praying for your peace.
