Thomas W. Kelly
Served in Vietnam; devoted father and grandfather
Thomas W. Kelly, 72, of Middletown, N.J., died peacefully on November 13, 2020, with his wife at his side.
Tom was born on January 30, 1948, and grew up in Colonia, N.J. He graduated from Woodbridge High School in 1966 and resided in Middletown for the past 49 years. Tom served in the Vietnam War from 1969 to 1970 (3rd Sqdn 1st Cav 1st Armd Div). He earned multiple combat distinctions, including a Bronze Star Medal and a Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and was a survivor of the Battle of Hamburger Hill.
Tom married Mary Cerchiaro in 1971. He worked in various roles at Exxon Bayway Refinery in Linden, N.J., IFF in Union Beach, N.J., and Merck in Rahway, N.J.
Tom was devoted to his children and worked diligently to provide for their education. He loved sports (esp. Penn State Football) and played basketball on his high school varsity team. He coached little league baseball and was known to take the team out for ice cream after games, win or lose. He was gifted with a sharp mind and had an intuitive grasp of mathematics and an interest in history. Tom was loyal and trustworthy and lived without pretension. He is best remembered for his generosity and his company in simple day-to-day life.
Tom is survived by his wife, Mary Kelly; his daughter, Jennifer Kelly Sullivan and son-in-law, Bart Sullivan; his son, James Kelly and daughter-in-law, Wei Kelly; and his four grandchildren, Eamon, Grace, Sean, and Julian who he loved dearly.
A Memorial Mass at St. Mary's Church in New Monmouth and burial at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery will be held in the summer. To send condolences, please visit www.pflegerfuneralhome.com.

i remember a Tom Kelly i knew who worked in Merck. He was in Security. He was a great guy and will be missed.
