PEEL
Fern Irene Peel passed away Saturday, October 21, 2017, at Day Spring Assisted Living. Known as “Nanny” to all who knew her, she was born in Nashville, Arkansas on June 1917, then moved to Sulphur Springs, TX, where she spent her childhood.
At the age of 16 Irene worked her way through beauty school and began a life-long career as a hair dresser retiring when she was 75. For most of that career she worked in Lubbock, TX, where she raised three girls on her own.
Irene loved people, loved to laugh and when she was younger loved to dance. She also loved to play bingo and had a real gift for winning.
On June 21st of this year she reached the milestone of 100 years and enjoyed a big party with all her friends and family present with gifts and good wishes. Her health declined after that point until she died of natural causes.
She was smart, hard-working and caring. In short, she was an amazing woman and will be profoundly missed.
Irene is survived by the daughters Sandy Steen of Plano, Sharon Barrow of McKinney and Linda Lintenbrink of Wylie. She was the grandmother of five and the great-grandmother of eight.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 28, 2017 at Charles W. Smith and Sons Funeral Home, 601 S. Tennessee St., McKinney, TX 75069 with Jessica Skidmore officiating. Interment will follow at Weaver Cemetery.

Learning today of Irene's passing brought both a smile to my face and a tear to my eyes. A part of my life is now empty in a physical body, but cherished memories will always remain. The friendship shared by the Peel's and Bulls' families began during a dark time in our Country, World War II. But a friendship that was established in 1943-44 has lasted up until today. Mom, Dad and Irene are together again and for that I'm grateful. But those stories of the twins will always be among my favorites. Hearing my parents called Uncle Derald and Aunt Jo thrill me so. I commend and applaud you three daughters and your families for always being there for her...and for welcoming me as if I was part of the family as well. I will always remember that pretty red head with every hair in place coming to Paris just to see me graduate from High School. But that was the type friend she was to our family. I could ramble on and on and tell stories of rations, pies and cakes, but know my thoughts and prayers are with you today and in the days ahead. Much love, Derald Joe
