Andrew Angermeier Obituary

Brother Andrew Angermeier C.S.C. 1922 - 2009 Brother Andrew Angermeier was born on April 30, 1922, in Evansville, Indiana, the third child and oldest boy of seven children of Oscar Angermeier and Wilfrieda Rexing Angermeier. His father Oscar spent his life as a machinist. Andrew was baptized at St. Benedict Church in Evansville on May 2, 1922. He was eventually confirmed at St. Joseph Parish in German Township, Indiana, where he also attended elementary school. In 1936, he entered Reitz Memorial High School in Evansville, Indiana, but he only was a student there for one year. At the beginning of his sophomore year, he transferred to Sacred Heart College in Watertown, Wisconsin, where he also became a candidate for the Brothers of Holy Cross. He graduated from Sacred Heart in 1940 and entered St. Joseph Novitiate in Rolling Prairie, Indiana, on August 15, 1940. He made his first vows there on August 16, 1941, and pronounced his perpetual vows as a Brother of Holy Cross at Sacred Heart Basilica on the University of Notre Dame campus on August 16, 1944. For the first part of his life as a brother, he was known as Brother Carol; he dropped that to return to his baptismal name of Andrew in 1973. Brother Andrew earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1945 and a master's degree from there in 1952. His major field of study was English. He also earned a master of library science degree in 1955 from St. John's University in Brooklyn, New York and later a Ph.D. in 1970 from the University of Texas in Austin with English again his major field of study. Although most people remember him for his fifty years associated with St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas, he also taught at Vincentian Institute in Albany, New York; at Cathedral High School in Indianapolis, Indiana; at St. Edward High School in Lakewood, Ohio; and at Archbishop Hoban High School in Akron, Ohio. He began his work as librarian at St. Edward's University in 1956 and spent nearly fifty years as part of the university as a librarian and a professor of English. While serving as a professor of English, he also served for a time as superior of the local community of the Brothers of Holy Cross on the campus or as the Assistant Superior for many years. In his spare time, he loved to "tinker" and do minor maintenance and painting. He spent many a summer in volunteer work around the country doing maintenance in the works associated with Holy Cross. For the past few months Brother Andrew had been weakening physically. He passed away peacefully on January 2, 2009, under hospice care at the age of 85. A wake service will be held at Our Lady of Peace Chapel on the St. Edward's University campus on Tuesday, January 6th at 7:00p.m. A funeral service will follow in the same location on Wednesday, January 7th at noon. Burial will be at Assumption Cemetery in the area reserved for the Congregation of Holy Cross.. http://wcfish.com

Memories and Condolences
for Andrew Angermeier

Not sure what to say?

Some of my warmest memories of St. Edward's center around this man. His door was always open to anyone who needed him, and he listened with love and understanding. He insisted on calling me only by my christian name, and inspired me in many ways. I will never forget the way he would slowly, and methodically hang up his tweed jacket, hat, and scarf upon entering the classroom. He was never in a rush. And while many of his students missed it, he had a wonderful sense of humor. Brother Angermeier, you were dearly loved and will be deeply missed, but I know you are at peace in the arms of your maker. Thank you for all you never knew you did for me.

Although our family moved away from Evansville early in my life we spent many holidays and summer vacations at the farm with Grandma, Grandpa, Aunt Lucile and any of Dad's brothers and sisters who might be around. I remember my namesake Uncle Andrew as being a very tall, quite man. Later on when I discovered fishing as a passtime my Uncle Walter told me of Uncle Andrew's love of fishing. I think I would have enjoyed dunking a worm or two with him. Now, he has joined my dad and they can fish together until I get there.

I had the privilege of living with Br Andrew while teaching at St. Ed's University. I admired his easy-going life style, prayerful behavior, dry humor, fascination with reading, generosity in helping others, talent in a variety of maintenance chores, and the joy of watching him catch fish on expeditions with friends in Marble Falls. He was an excellent mentor for his students and the men he lived with in Holy Cross.

Another of the "great pillars" of St. Edward's University has finally received his just reward. Peace to Brother Carrol, and again many thanks for what he rendered to me and ohers who were at SEU under his guidance.

Because I knew him best between 1957 and 1967 as Bro.Carrol, I automatically place that name with his memory. Wise and witty, he always spoke softly and with great
concern about any question I brought to him. I always thought of him as one of the pillars of the St. Edward's that was coming to life as a center of the educational purpose of the
Brothers of Holy Cross.

My most vivid memory of Uncle Andrew is him sitting next to Grandpa at the supper table out at the farm and surveying his chattering nieces and nephews. He invariably suggested we have a "Quaker party," meaning he wanted us all to be quiet. It never really worked for long.

Brother Andrew was a guest at our lakehouse several times. He loved to fish with my husband Steve, Brother Larry Stewart and Brother Donard. This is a picture of one of their abundant catches. You can imagine my surprise to find out he was from our hometown, Evansville, Indiana. We will miss him.

We loved having Brothers Andrew, Donard, and Larry Stewart visit us on Lake LBJ for our fishing adventures. We know that Brother Andrew is now fishing with new gear on a beautiful lake with endless shores. Good fishing, Ole Buddy.
