I've been in my Dad's house since his passing, going through all the objects of his life, his character, as well as my Mom's and their life together. I am so heavy-hearted without him. We cried together and helped each other through the hardship of my Mom's death, yet he would also be the optimistic one, reminding me we had so much to be thankful for and that we had to keep on going. He was funny, kind and so interesting. No matter his own struggles, he remained upbeat. I miss him terribly. It helps me to read everyone's entry, thank you. I am so happy I have so many wonderful voicemails and recordings of him. I'm happy to share them if anyone would like to hear his voice.

Don, Spook as i knew him was an outstanding B-58 navigator-bombardier who always kept me on my toes in our competition with each other. He was instrumental in making the B-58 a better weapon system. After retirement it was always a pleasure to see him at the reunions discussing old times and the current stock market. He was one of the good guys and always fun to be around.
Shortly after Christmas 2015 while Sharon and I were driving from Sam Antonio to Tennessee durning horrible weather with tornados and heavy rain all over north Texas Don was on the phone with us many times giving us updates as he was worried about us and offering us a place to spent the night. We should have listened to him more carefully as we ended up way to close the Garland Texas tornado. Don will be missed but we are sure he is making heaven even better as that is his nature.

I went to Shaw AFB in the summer of 1966 for a supervisors checkout in the RF-4C as part of my duties in the 12AF reconnaissance operations office. Spook and I went through the ground school together and he was my WSO for the flight portion. What a delight to have someone with his experience, especially his time in the B-58, when running through to mountains at night. Don was a delight to fly with and by chance his wife Peggy and my wife Elma were both from Harlingen and knew one another. I always hoped we would serve together somewhere, but it did not happen. I knew he was retired in Austin and even tried to contact him in the late 1980, but did not connect. A fine man, a patriot and a true Texans. God rest! Bill Bernert

When Don came into my life in 2005, I could not imagine what the future held. He guided my professional growth to unexpected heights. Along the way, we became friends. I will miss him. My prayers go out to his other friends, and most of all, to his beloved family.
