One of my favorite Teachers at Albert Sidney Johnston High School in Austin, TX. I had him for four years and he always made me roll my "Rs"! He'd sing, "Roll, roll, roll, your boat, gently down the stream" and would roll almost all the "Rs". He was a great and wonderful Man and demanded greatness from us and respect, in which we all eagerly gave him. I will never forget him. Mr. Jose Gonzalez!

My sincerest sympathies to Mr. Gonzalez's family. May all your memories sustain you now and forever.
I was part of Mr. Gonzalez's choir at Johnston High School graduate of 1969.
Now that I read of his history and his life in Mexico, I understand his desire to take us to Mexico for a 4 - 6 city visit/tour and sing in 1969. We had a blast, wonderful trip. And I also remember his eagerness for the choir to perform to the best of our ability. Now that he has passed I hope that we lived up to his standard. He was a passionate instructor and only asked for our best. I will always remember those days. Singing in that 1969 choir was the best of my senior year. To this day when I sing at mass I remember who taught me to use my voice for the instrument that it is.

Fly high Mr. Gonzalez!
When I come to the pearly gates I pray that you are there waiting for me to ask me to sing in your choir.

I have not seen Mr. Gonzalez since he was the choir leader at Johnston High School in the 70s. He was a tough and strong teacher and he taught about practice and discipline so we could learn about different types of music. He was a beloved choir director.
I recall he often brought his wife and children to our concerts; he clearly loved his family. He can Rest In Peace for all his beautiful work; may your memories of him help you in the months ahead.
