Venton DOUGHTIE Obituary

DOUGHTIE Jr., Venton L. 1930-2017 Venton L. Doughtie, Jr. was born on December 29, 1930 to Venton L. Doughtie, Sr. and Norma Polliard Doughtie in Lubbock, Texas. He passed away on July 19, 2017. In 1938 the family moved to Austin where Venton attended Bryker Woods Elementary, University Jr. High and Stephen F. Austin High School. He entered the University of Texas under the Naval ROTC program and graduated with a BBA in 1953. While at UT he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and was on the wrestling team where he won the Southwest Conference Heavy Weight Wrestling Championship. He was invited to try out for the 1954 Olympics. However, he was called to report for duty aboard his ship eight days after graduation. He served aboard the USS Fessenden for two years of active duty where his ship was stationed primarily in the North Atlantic. His ship was also sent to guard against the threat of USSR ships during the Guatemalan Blockade. Venton remained in the Naval Reserves for nine more years. He commanded the Reserve units in both Harlingen and McAllen. In 1961 his ship was sent to the Bay of Pigs Invasion. He retired from the Navy as a Lieutenant shortly thereafter. In 1955 Venton married Jean Wynn whom he had known since childhood. They had two sons, Venton "Lee" Doughtie III and Thomas Wynn Doughtie. In 1960 Venton started a homebuilding business in McAllen. After ten years he and his family moved back to Austin where he continued building homes for twenty five more years. He built many custom homes and remodeled many older homes in the west Austin area. He also began a small ranching operation which continues today. Many of Venton's happiest times were at family gatherings at the ranch sharing good food, good times, the open space and view of the Hill Country. He always had horses, cows and dogs. Venton loved animals and animals seemed to respond to him in return. His Doberman, Heidi, protected him from anything she thought might harm him including a rowdy Brangus bull. Venton was a lifelong Presbyterian. He served as a Deacon and Elder in the First Presbyterian Church of McAllen. After his return to Austin he joined Covenant Presbyterian Church where he served on the Building Committee. In his later years he was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. Venton was involved with several organizations including the Heritage Society of Austin, the Rotary Club of Austin, The Austin Club, Austin Assembly, the Austin Woods and Water Club and the American Legion. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Franklin Savings Association and was instrumental in the restoration of many old homes used for branch offices including the Tips House and Tips Building on Congress Avenue which became Franklin's home office. Venton will be remembered for his funny "sayings," his deliberate mispronunciation of words and his honesty and determination to do the right thing. He will be greatly missed by his family and many lifelong friends. Venton is predeceased by his parents Venton L. Doughtie, Sr. and Norma Polliard Doughtie, his sister, Darlyne Doughtie Stewart and two nephews, Thomas Stewart and Leslie Stewart. Venton is survived by Jean Doughtie, his wife of 63 years, his sons Lee and his wife Dawnelle, and Thomas Doughtie, his granddaughter, Elizabeth Doughtie and grandsons Phillip Doughtie and Wynn Doughtie. Survivors also include his aunt Betty Jean Doughtie, his niece Sheryl Patton and her daughter Penny and son Ross, his sister-in-law Judith Guy and her husband Don, and his niece Ashley Hammerich and her husband Nils, nephews James Anderson and his wife Susanna, and Jason Anderson, as well as many great nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Dr. Peter Nutson, the wonderful caring staff at Brookdale Northwest Hills and Assisting Hands West Austin. A memorial service will be held Monday, July 24, 2017 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N. Lamar at 11:00 o'clock. A reception will follow the memorial at Weed-Corley-Fish. A private family burial will be held at Austin Memorial Park. The family would appreciate remembrances to The Salvation Army, Helping Hand Home for Children, The Settlement Home for Children or a charity of your choice. I was sorry to read of Venton's death. My parents and his were good bridge-playing friends. While I didn't know him, I know he will be missed by so many. My thoughts are with the family. Sincerely, Nell Johnston Martin

So sorry to hear of the loss of Venton, or Bud as he was known in our family. He was loved by my father Jerry Holmes. We were told they had great adventures as boys in Cleburne. I'm sure he will be greatly missed.

Jean, Lee, Dawnelle and all your family, what a great guy! After reading his obituary I wish I had known him. I know you are so proud of him and have many wonderful memories. I still remember losing my dad when he was only 70 and the mixed emotions of grief and gratitude that he was no longer suffering. Sending my love and prayers to you all, Nancy Kocurek
