My name is Jerry Grummell I am from Santa Rosa California. I have had the good fortune to have know Bob Egenolf for 78 years. Not only have I know Bob but I know the whole Egenolf family. I went through 8 years of grade school,4 years of high school and 4 years of college (roomed together for one year during college).
I first met Bob in Sept.1939 at ST. Rochs Grade School. My mother had a book with facts about my early years, this book container a printing of who my first playmate was and it was Bobby. Fortunately over the next 78 years I shortened that to Bob. In the 3rd grade Bob observed that I was cheating in a marble game so he taught me a little bit about honesty."Bob was a teacher from the get go". .When I was 16 I was in my fathers car with my brand new license and Bob watched me get my first traffic ticket. Bob admonished me by saying" You should have stopped". Bob still in a teaching mode taught me a little respect for the vehicle code,he taught me well! Expect for a one way street issue ,when I was 19, I never received a ticket for the rest of my life.
While rooming in College I greatly appreciated Bob's every day influence. In college I remember such things as borrowing Tuxedos so we could go to the prom. Bob graduated and went on to active duty with the United States Air Force as a Navigator on a A'WAC plane. While I was finishing up my last semester in college Bob observed and felt I was veering slightly to the left of true north, this was not a moral compass but had to do with selection of friends. Bob took the time to sit down and write a letter doing a personal inventory of me with suggestion. This was a very hard letter for Bob to write and even a harder letter for me to read but it was the best letter I ever received in my life. To have a true friend to take the time to do this for you is priceless beyond description. Bob has always continued as a teacher and a friend to me.
I moved to California and Bob transferred to an Air Force Base which was 70 miles from where I lived. This enabled us to spend his last two years in the service together. As we grew up with our family's we where able to visit each other. As our children grew older we where able to get together with some of our long time school friends ( such as Jerry Rhinehart who is here present today) and there wife's for week long vacations. When we did this we would travel to the state where the host couple lived so they could show off there state. Bob and LouPaula hosted us at The Santa Lupita Ranch in the Great State of Texas. Those vacations hold very fond memories for me and the time spent with my friends.
I was very fortunate to host Bob here in California when he visited in June of 2017. Bob's last night here we went out to dinner with my kids. My son Mike was seated next to Bob , I asked Mike if he knew what Bob's middle name was and Mike said no. Mike then asked Bob what his middle name was and Bob said Vincent. Michael Vincent Grummell said good name.
In closing I want to convey my condolences to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. I will now look forward to the next step on our journey when we meet up again.
