Florence Crane Obituary

Florence Crane

Salem, OR - Florence Elaine Crane was born in St. Andrews, WA on April 7, 1920 and entered into rest on October 20, 2016 at her home in Salem, OR. She was the sixth & youngest daughter of Carl and Andrea Jasperson. Florence grew up in the area of Burlington, WA where she was the first girl to graduate high school with a 4-stripe athletic sweater.

In 1939, she made a visit to relatives in California and met her husband-to-be Donald Crane. Florence was a freshman at La Sierra College when one night in 1941 she & Don drove to Yuma, AZ and eloped! Early in their marriage, the US army stationed Don in Europe and Florence returned to Burlington where she purchased a beauty salon. When Don returned stateside he surprised Florence on their anniversary; after hearing a knock she opened the door to find him standing on the porch. They shared 62 happy years of marriage together.

While in Loma Linda, CA for Don's medical education and after thirteen years of anticipation Florence was blessed with a baby boy, Dennis. Then during Don's internship at Portland Adventist Hospital their family was completed with a beautiful baby girl, Debbie.

Florence raised & nurtured her young family in Port Orford & Bandon, OR where Don served as a family physician. During this time she attended college in Coos Bay and was an active member of her church and community. In 1967, they moved to Salem, OR where Don completed a psychiatry residency. Here is where Florence built her home and enjoyed many wonderful years of painting, teaching doll making, collecting, crafting & quilting. Her willingness to open her home, share her artistic gifts, & mentor others brought many people happiness and joy over the years.

Florence is survived by her son Dennis Crane (Elizabeth), daughter Debbie Nielsen (Brent), 8 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. She will be remembered for being a wonderful mother with a mischievous sense of humor, for living a faithful & loving Christian life, and as a proper lady of immense strength.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm on Sunday, October 30, 2016 at the Salem Central Adventist Church, 1330 Summer Street NE, Salem, OR 97301. In lieu of flowers, Florence's wish was for donations made to the Salem Central Adventist Church.

Mom, we are thankful you are at peace and will sleep until Jesus comes, when you can be reunited with all your family and friends. Until then…you will be missed.

Florence will be sorely missed. I met Florence through my Salem Doll Club. She also attended a block of the Month quilting Club with me. She loved making doll quilts which doll club members coveted. Florence was one of the kindest, wisest ladies I have ever known. Rest in Peace Florence. You will never be forgotten. You were truly a lady.

Florence and Don were our best friends from medical school and forward. We had many very pleasant visits and vacations with them. It was always a joy to be in their company. Their children are like family to us. Their passing has left big gaps in our own lives.
