My memory of Sam is one most of you won't have. I met Sam the summer of 1950 when he worked for the "Fire Patrol" in Elk River, Idaho. He had just graduated from high school in Lewiston. I first met him when he was sitting at the counter at the drug store having a coke. I accidentally mistook him for my boyfriend (similar in appearance from the back) and walked up behind him and put my arms around his waist. We were both very surprised. He was such a nice guy. I was happy to call him my friend. I'm sorry for the loss you all are enduring but thought you might like to hear a story from his younger years.

I remember Sam and Teddy were always there greeting us as we came to church at St. Pauls. They were good friends of my parents and to me, their generation seemed to be from a different time from ours.... They made time for their friends, they didn't hesitate to help a friend in need. They were successful, but didn't take anything or anyone for granted.

Your father always seemed to me to embody the very best qualities of that generation. Always ready to serve, always helpful and friendly, a great example to follow and always a great big smile and a handshake even to me as a kid! I can see that the Skillern boys got many great qualities from him (and your mother for sure!)

I remember my parents talking about Sam with great respect and admiration.
Sam and Teddy left their best legacy in their children, and in turn you are leaving a great legacy in Salem and much further as well.

I have a theory that the America of the 1930's produced some of the best works and people ever, and Sam helps prove my theory! It wasn't an easy time, but it produced people who were honest and good and put other people first.

I found that after my mom died, her example and words to me over my life became much more ingrained in me and I gave more thought and effort to live up to her standards. I know Sam has had and will have the same effect for you and many others because of how he lived his life.
He finished the race strong and passed the baton on!
