Sophie and I met when we were teens. Two very unconventional Greek girls from different cities, who found each other. We shared many life experiences over the years and decades. I recall after her first meeting with Mike, she immediately felt he was to be her life partner.
Sophie was loving, brave, courageous, adventurous, cultured, kind, supportive, fun, funny, dramatic, accomplished and always... a "PBS fan". She had a huge spirit. Sophie could talk up a storm, always remembered thoughtful details of friend's lives, and tell a story like nobody's business. She was feminine and fashion savvy but also a warrior; she had an iron fist in a velvet glove. Sophie could be reserved but she had a hilarious irreverent streak and a raucous laugh. It was the best.
I recently reconnected with Sophie, hoping to spend more time together and wanting to let her know how much I adored, respected and loved her. Sadly, she became ill soon after and we never met in person. I know I'm not alone in feeling these sentiments, and hope—wherever Sophie is— will somehow know how she impacted so many of us.
