Thomas Henry Nevens, passed away on Friday, September 3, 2021.
Tom was born to Thomas Sr. and Freda Nevens (nee Quigley, later Vickers) on October 30th, 1941 in West Hartlepool, England. Tom and his brother David lived in several places around the North East of England moving with their father's work as a police constable.
Tom began his career in journalism in 1958, reporting the news in and around Newcastle Upon Tyne. In 1963 he moved to Canada. Tom's first stop was Halifax before moving to St. Catharines and joining the St. Catharines Standard where he was a long-time member of the newsroom until his retirement.
In St. Catharines, Tom would marry the love of his life Josephine (Luciani) and be father to two sons, Martin and Lucas.
Tom could often be found holding court at the Kilt and Clover. A lifelong fan of Newcastle United football club, Tom adopted the Montreal Canadiens upon his arrival in Canada. He enjoyed curling and was an avid golfer and a proud member of Rockway Vineyards Golf Course.
His memory will be forever cherished by his surviving family, Jo, Martin and Lucas, his daughter in law Jessica (Braddock), brother David, and his many friends.
We're thankful for the outpouring of support and sharing of so many great memories.
As per his wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be arranged at a later date.
In lieu of gifts or flowers donations are encouraged to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada.

I was privileged to work with Tom for more than 25 years at The Standard. He was consummate editor who excelled in his work. He was mentor to many many journalists over the years, including me. Our work was better because of his efforts. Tom was also a wonderful co-worker — friendly, kind, compassionate, interested in those around him. It was a pleasure to work with him. After Tom retired, I saw him occasionally at Rockway, the Kilt or a Standard event and we always had a good conversation sharing memories and talking about our present lives. He was immensely proud of his family. I am saddened by Tom's passing, and grateful of our shared years at The Standard. I offer my sympathy and condolences to Jo, Martin and Lucas.

To Jo and family: I was distressed o learn of Tom's passing. While it is many years since we last saw one another, I have thought of him often. We met in the early years of our newspaper careers... a time when the world was changing and there was excitement and optimism in the air. There were fun times and good memories. Please accept my condolences on the loss of a man whom i am honoured to have known.

Tom was a mentor to young reporters when i worked at The Standard in 1975. Many a time we would gather in the basement of Tom's and Jo's home talking about journalism, world events, hockey and curling. While I had not spoken to Tom for years, he was never far from my thoughts. Rest in peace my friend.

I so enjoyed my years at The Standard, working with veteran scribes like Tom. He held reporters and fellow editors to a high standard in their writing, reporting and editing. He would point out errors or omissions in a firm but respectful way. What a breath of fresh air at a time when journalism was meaningful and respected, thanks to people like Tom.

My deepest condolences to the Nevens family on the passing of Tom. He was a lovely man who was liked by all who met him. I first met Tom when he worked for the Standard. Then when he retired he became a member at Rockway Vineyards golf course. During the summer months there were few days that Tom didn't golf. He will be missed by the members at Rockway. May he rest in peace.
