Harold Shelly and my father were first cousins. A few years before Katrina, I went out to New Orleans and spent a couple of weeks staying with Harold. He took me all over the city and seemed to know people everywhere we went. He and Hollie took me to his home in Bay St. Louis, Miss. for a few days. He even let me drive his boat. We visited six cemeteries, where I was able to do much research on my family genealogy. We all had some of the most wonderful days together and I felt I had my dad back for a while, as he had so many of dad's mannerisms and speech qualities.

I will miss Harold so much, as will anyone who really know him. I will treasure the memory of my last phone call with him a few weeks ago. All of my family share in the great loss of this very wonderful man. He will not be forgotten.

I have very fond memories of Mr. Shelly. He was there our team as the De La Salle based Lakeside Ramblers in the 60's. I am not sure at that young age we appreciated his commitment.

I remember with great fondness growing up two houses down from Harold on South Rocheblave street in the 1970s. He was an incredibly kind and generous person to all the families on our block, always interested in the lives of the people around him. He took me to Tulane basketball games and let me help him score the games from the press box when I was grade school. And he sponsored my trip to Boys State, one of the many programs he cared about and supported. Boy, would the world be a better place if every block had a neighbor like Harold Shelly.
