Nature has lost a great friend, and science one of it's best teacher's. Richard left an impact on many people around him, especially when it came to respecting nature. Anytime when we all went camping, (family and friends) undoubtedly we learned something new about the environment from him ,even though, we just did not realize it at the time. This subtle spread of knowledge did, and will leave the world he was born into a little better, something I think would have make him very happy. Not only did the subtle teachings create a big impact, but also we would have loved to read his book that you wanted to write.

A loss of a brilliant man with a brilliant brain, an enviromentalist who truly loved his work.
Richard, I was so looking forward to your planned visit to the UK, this year, so many things we discussed and planned for your visit. Did enjoyed that bottle of Jameson's and watching the Saints though...You were not only my brother in law, but also my friend. Will miss you.

I was a co-worker of Richard's for severals years and know of his dedication to protect the environment and willingness to teach. It is always hard to lose someone. Find strength and comfort through the love, prayers and support of others during your time of grief. It's the little things that you will remember, the quiet moments, the smiles, the laughter. Although it may seem hard right now, it's the memories of these little things that help console the pain and bring back the smiles. I know this as I lost my younger sister to God almost six months ago. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family.

I offer my deepest sympathies on Richard's passing. I first met Richard at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory in Ocean Springs, MS in about 1970. I later worked with him at MMS from 1989 until the present. We used to talk about old times on the Mississippi coast.
