As a Navy Communicator I had the great good fortune to serve with John and to have shared his wonderful sense of humour and exceptional professionalism. This is a sad day for the Navy Communications Branch as well as his family. In a sense, Navy was part of his family. Thanks for everything John.

John took over Perth from Gordon Paris as CPORS and at the time I was LSRO trying to make PO Both Gordon and John were wonderful mentors, but operated very differently. John loved being hands on in the Radcen and couldn't resist playing with the gear. Adrian Cummins was the skipper and tested everyone to the max. John was a terrific bloke, hard boss but very fair. I have very good memories of our working together...John Farrell

Having known John since we were both OCOs, I have fond memories of those years growing up and enjoying life. It is when someone passes that you tend to think of all those good times you had together, and I know that during this pase week or more that I have thought about what we did together and as a result appreciate even more having known and worked with John. May he rest in peace.

I only run into John mid year at Canberra Airport as we were both about to fly home for the weekend. Like always, he was cheerful, friendly and reminded me we need to catch up over a cold one and talk about the good old days and what we have been up too. I'm shocked and very disappointed I won't now have that opportunity. I have a lot of respect for John, proud of him and his achievements and will always be his friend. He represented the RAN's Communications Branch as a professional with pride and zest. Rest in Peace John.
