Dear Peggi, Sam and Dan,

I just heard that Joe passed away. What a great loss. My heart aches for you.

I remember Joe from scouting. A wonderful father, so patient and willing to teach his sons.

One afternoon, I was in my backyard, and Sam was pretty young and in the front yard. All of a sudden, I heard a grown man talking with him. My heart racing, I ran to the front yard, ready to protect my son from a stranger.

What I saw melted my heart. It was Joe. He was kind like that. If he was driving by and saw Sam, he would stop the truck for a few minutes to talk to a young boy, who he knew was still mourning the loss of his own dad.

I will be praying for your family. For comfort and that your pain of loss will be dimmed by so many great memories.

You will be in our thoughts.

Throughout my entire life there were few things that were always a constant from the day I was born, and one of the most impactful ones was my Uncle Joey from Brooklyn (as I've always called him). He was a wonderful Godfather and an incredible friend to our family year in and year out. He showed me what it meant to be a true friend to someone, with his unwavering love and support for not just his best friends (my mom and dad) but for their children and animals too. I loved spending time with him as much as possible and will never forget all the times we got to spend in Florida with him and his family and all the times he came to visit us in Boston with his adopted children and family. He was truly one of the good men on this planet and the impact he made on me as a child and as a man will never go away. I know I speak for my whole family when I say he meant the world to us and his memory will live with us forever.

Dear Peggi and family, Joe was the best umpire ever! Vero Beach Little League Softball was blessed to have had Joe behind the plate for many years. Loved his smile and his attitude. Our prayers are with all of you. Much love, Bernie and Marge Grall
