Isabel Wood Saltsman Coode, 95, of Port Saint Lucie, Florida, died peacefully, surrounded by family on December 23, 2017.
Born in Alexandria, Virginia, Isabel was the middle child of the late Samuel Atherton Saltsman and Elizabeth Wood Saltsman. Isabel and her brothers, the late Robert and Samuel, were raised in Catonsville, Maryland where they liked to sail, play tennis, and golf.
Isabel was a pioneer of her time. She graduated from the University of Maryland and earned a Master's in social work from Howard University. She served as a licensed clinical social worker in Catonsville, Maryland and Tallmadge, Ohio for many years, before retiring to Port Saint Lucie.
A passionate advocate for social justice, Isabel volunteered with Crisis Intervention, Habitat for Humanity and Meals on Wheels. In addition, to volunteering, Isabel played many hours of bridge at the St. Lucie Council on Aging. She was active with the Unitarian Church of Stuart, Florida, where she built a deep network of friends and enjoyed countless afternoons of lively discussion.
Isabel was predeceased by her husband of 20 years, Joseph Coode, and her beloved granddaughter, Michele Snell. She is survived by daughters Elizabeth Kelley and Martha Dotson of Port Saint Lucie, son-in-law Allan Dotson, grandchildren Brian and Virginia (Erin) Dotson, grandson-in-law, Reginald Snell, and six great-grandchildren, Nicole, Justin (Alicia), Kennedy, Isabel, Iris and Petra.
She will be remembered for her fierce tennis game and inspiring conversation. Her quick wit and candor will be missed.
A service will be held at a later date at the Unitarian Church in Stuart, Florida.
