Shirley Ward Obituary

Shirley Ward

Madison - Shirley Coon Ward, age 86, passed away on October 7, 2018. Shirley was born on March 6, 1932 to George Dennis Coon and Minnie May (Rost) Coon in Nashville, Tennessee.Shirley is preceded in death by her parents and her brother George Dennis Coon, Jr.. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Curtis Eugene Ward; nieces Crista Kelly, Cheryl Harper (David); Dana Bass (Billy), and nephew David Head (Tracy).

Shirley was a warm and lovely lady who cherished her family and friends. She brightened a room with her warm smile and genuine politeness to all she touched. The people with whom she worked throughout her life time admired and respected her dedication to them as well as to her administrative duties. Shirley had a broad circle of friends and enjoyed their luncheon gatherings and good camaraderie. She was a graduate of Isaac Litton High School, class of 1950. She worked for twenty years at Genesco Corporation as the secretary to one of the directors. She was employed at Goodpasture Christian School before being invited by Ira North to come to Madison Church of Christ and be his administrative assistant. She loved working with him and other ministers during her forty years at the church. Her kind voice was one heard frequently on the phone and was filled with valuable information about caring for those in need.

Shirley wore "many hats" in professional organizations. She was an organizer of class reunions, church, and civic events. She served as a volunteer at Skyline Hospital and on the Alumni Board of Isaac Litton for 25 years which elected her alumnus of the year.

She loved traveling with Gene on trips and vacations, including trips with friends to Europe, cruises to Alaska, the Caribbean, Panama Canal, Hawaii and across America and Canada.
