Memorial services for Elvin McCann will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 14, 2018 at the Cheneyville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ross Ford officiating. Burial will follow at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Hixson-Ducote Funeral Home of Bunkie. Mr. McCann, age 81 of Cheneyville, passed away on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at his residence. Elvin played basketball for Northwestern State University where he was later inducted into the Hall of Fame. He went on to coach at Redemptorist from 1961 - 1969 they took home two state championships in 1967-1968 and 1968-1969. He then coached at ASH from 1969 - 1975 and Barbe High School from 1976 – 1981, when he retired. After his coaching career, he worked for Poole Well Service until his retirement. Mr. McCann also served in the United States Army at Fort Jackson, SC and then in the Reserves in Louisiana where he became a Captain. Mr. McCann is preceded in death by two sons, Robert Brice McCann and Lee Rutledge McCann; his parents, Kerrie and Thelma Maddox McCann; his in-laws, Earl and Gladys Rutledge; and his brother, Horace McCann. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Sally Rutledge McCann of Cheneyville; his children, Brad McCann and wife Shana of Lake Charles and Mary Lynn Bounds and husband Patrick of Sulphur; one sister, Hazel McNutt of Cheneyville; his grandchildren, Clint Benoit and wife Jackie, Jordan McCann, Rhett McCann, Jacob McCann, Katie McCann, Brice Bounds and Olivia Bounds; and his great-grandchildren, Victoria Benoit and Jason Benoit. Friends may visit with the family on Friday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Hixson-Ducote Funeral Home in Bunkie and Saturday at the Cheneyville United Methodist Church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Children's Methodist Home, 904 Deville Lane, Ruston, LA 71270. Coach McCann was an outstanding high school basketball coach. He began the great boys basketball tradition at Redemptorist High School. He gave alot to the school and his impact is immeasurable.
