Joe was a remarkably accomplished, enthusiastic, and generous scholar. He invited me to give a few presentations at LSU, and was a great host (and posed original questions). I treasure a copy of his translation of the Dialogue of Mercury and Charon by Alfonso de Valdés, which he autographed and gave me. He will be greatly missed.
