"O death, where is your victory. O death, where is your sting?" The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." 1 Corinthians 15:55-56. Richard Faures Rathbone, Sr., M.D., faithful servant of Christ, saw God's work in him to completion and received his eternal crown of righteousness on September 10, 2020. He was surrounded by his loving wife, Michele, and family as his valiant battle with cancer came to an end. A brilliant doctor, compassionate counselor, and steadfast friend, he used his gifts at every opportunity to spread the gospel. His life on earth portrayed the redeeming love of our Lord Jesus Christ. Richard was born on September 1, 1955, and grew up in Baton Rouge, La. He graduated from Washington and Lee University in Virginia, where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity; and LSU Medical School in New Orleans. He was a gifted diagnostician who loved a challenge and spent hours researching ways to help his patients. His passion for learning matched his compassion for people, and he found his niche as a rural doctor in his bustling medical practice in Clinton, La. A true country doctor, he could be found making house calls or stitching up friends in his own kitchen, often trading for food or services. Richard delighted in his work and valued each of his patients dearly. Throughout his 35 years in Clinton he served as the medical director of home health centers, nursing homes, rehab facilities, hospices, was Chief of Staff at Lane Memorial Hospital, and served as a long-time Board President at Silliman Institute. Richard's best days were spent on the golf course, in a duck blind, on a ski boat, and at Tiger Stadium watching LSU football. People were his passion, and he loved his friends as well as strangers-who-would-soon-become-his-friends. Richard was always involved in the life of his church and strongly believed in the healing power of forgiveness. He was a great conversationalist, the life of every party, and always the last one to leave. He loved a good story, and he starred in all the best ones. His greatest joy was spending time with his wife of 42 years, Michele, his six children (each of whom claimed to be his favorite), and his large extended family. In every way, Richard lived this life preparing for the next. Richard is survived by his wife, Michele Moreau Rathbone; daughters Rebecca Rathbone Harrod and husband Chambliss Harrod, M.D., Sarah Rathbone Corbin and husband Rev. Brent Corbin, Mary Jackson Rathbone Barham and husband Henry Barham, M.D., Elizabeth Rathbone, Anna Rathbone Miller and husband Andrew Miller; and son Richard Rathbone Jr. and wife Catherine. He was "Granddaddy" to George, Wait, Anna Charles, Chambliss Jr., John Moreau, and Michot Harrod; Nora Kline, Katherine, Mary, and Margaret Corbin; Jane, Henry Jr., Charles, Edward, and William Barham; Apoline Rathbone-Shirley; and Rose and Andrew Miller Jr. He is also survived by sisters Barbara Rathbone and Shawnee Rathbone McCord and husband Steve; his brother Jack Rathbone and wife Randee; brothers- and sisters-in-law Allen Lottinger, Tonsie Beach, Al and Margarette Moreau, Doug and Elaine Moreau, Becky and Ned Newsham, Margo and Mac McCarthy, Jeanne and Steve Caldarera, and Andre Moreau. He was predeceased by parents, Jack and Barbara Rathbone, sisters-in-law Colette Lottinger and Suzanne Moreau, and brother-in-law Pat Beach. Pallbearers will be Richard Rathbone Jr., Chambliss Harrod, Brent Corbin, Henry Barham, Andrew Miller, George Harrod, Wait Harrod, Jack Rathbone, Steve McCord, Al Moreau Jr., Doug Moreau, Andre Moreau, Allen Lottinger, Ned Newsham, Mac McCarthy, Steve Caldarera, Chet Harrod, Joe Kelly, Bill Myers, John Shirley, and Mart Stott. Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons Henry Barham Jr., Chambliss Harrod Jr., Charles Barham, Andrew Miller Jr., Edward Barham, John Moreau Harrod, William Barham, and Michot Harrod. Visiting at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government Street, 5pm to 8pm, Friday, September 18. Visiting at South Baton Rouge Presbyterian Church, 933 Staring Lane, 9am until religious services at 11am, Saturday, September 19, conducted by Rev. Nathan Tircuit and Rev. Brent Corbin. The service will be live-streamed at sbrpc.org The family extends a special thanks to his faithful and loyal staff at Rathbone Clinic in Clinton who worked beside him for 35 years; to Mark Mouton, M.D., Terry Zellmer, M.D., Sarah Beach Taylor, Vince Cataldo, M.D., Milind Javle, M.D.; and to the Foto Sisters who deeply ministered to him and his family this last year. Michele, I just saw this and to hear of Richard’s passing. I’m so sorry for your loss. Your life together was a blessing to watch grow over the years with children and grandchildren!! What a beautiful family!! Richard will truly be missed by those whom his life touched through the years. His legacy of family, generosity, love, compassion and caring lives on. He was truly a godly man and is singing with the Angels! My sympathies to the Rathbone and Moreau families.

Richard, Chris and I had some great fun together. The Rathbones where quite close to the Whites over the years and shared many great times and a few sad times. I was glad that Richard was spared more time in suffering and celebrate his new life . Kathy and I wish the Rathbone family the best.

I can’t seem to find the words to express what this doctor, counselor and friend meant to me through the 20 years he was my Primary Care doctor. I can’t remember how many times he would call my doctors at Ochsner and consult with them after my liver transplant and for my Ochsner doctors to tell me how impressed they were with Dr. Rathbone. He always took the time to listen to me and was quick to say a prayer with me or just give me a hug. He always asked me about my family and proudly told me about his family. My heart goes out to Michele for the loss of your soulmate and to Rebecca, Sarah, Mary Jackson, Elizabeth, Rich, Anna, their spouses and children for the loss of their loving father and Granddaddy! It is comforting to know this great physician is now at home with God.

I grew up down the street on Richards drive and I have a fond memory of a teenage party at the Rathbone’s house. We danced for a moment in time but I have not lived in Baton Rouge for a very long time.
It seems Richard had a wonderful life, touching many souls with pure goodness. My sincere condolences to his family.

My sincere condolences to the Rathbone family. We've lost a great doctor and a true friend. I was blessed to have him as our family doctor for 25 yrs. We'll be hard pressed to find another as good as he was, he even took great care of my parents in their later years. Rest in peace my friend. I'll see you again someday.

Mine and Donna’s prayers are being lifted for the family. He was an amazing man and friend. Whoever wrote these words pictured him perfectly : “ A brilliant doctor, compassionate counselor, and steadfast friend, he used his gifts at every opportunity to spread the gospel.” The great thing in his passing is that he is with Jesus. But he will surely be missed by me. What a true friend!

It was my pleasure to meet this wonderful man when LSU played Alabama for the national championship. At that point he became my doctor, friend and spiritual mentor. I can see him every month and he always made me feel at home. I will forever see him in the hall yelling Geauc Tigers and I would answer him Roll Tide. He changed my life in many ways for the better. He will always be in my heart. The entire family are in my prayers.

A truly caring human being who just happen to love his Lord and Savior, his large extended family, his friends, the communities of Clinton and Zachary and many patients from all walks of life from a broad area. Richard saved my youngest child's life when he check him on his kitchen floor and sent him on to the hospital with appendicitis. Michelle, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. May God fill your life with His Amazing Grace as you face each and every day. Your Faith, love and trust in Him will bring you comfort along with the love of your beautiful family. An amazing man that God saw to it that he would leave his footprints in all our lives not only as our doctor but a friend to all.

I was so sorry to hear about Richard's death. He and my brother Floyd Lewis were close friends in college and Sigma Ci fraternity brothers. He and Michele attended his funeral in Kentwood, LA Jan. 1996 which meant a great deal to my parents and myself. In reading the obit, it is evident that Richard loved fully and was loved fully and was a wonderful ambassador for Jesus. I will be praying for Michele and the entire Rathbone family in the days to come. I lost my husband 4 years ago and know what this valley is like. May God wrap you all in His loving arms and carry you through this difficult time as only He can. In sympathy, Gail Lewis Ratzlaff

Michele, we can’t express how sorry we are about Richard’s passing. I do however strongly feel he is going on to much better things eternally with God. The McGuire family will always have a special place in our hearts for the whole Rathbone family. And yes, I am one of those fortunate people to get stitched up in your kitchen, without deadening I might add. Please be assured that our prayers and love are coming your way. God bless you all.
