Marcia Ferne Mammen
Dec. 4, 1920 - Oct. 25, 2017
Salinas
Ferne Mammen, 96, passed away Wednesday, October 25, 2017, at her home in Salinas. Ferne was born December 4, 1920, second daughter to Leslie and Christine Duncan in La Grande, Oregon.
Ferne, a farm girl at heart, left Oregon for Santa Cruz to attend Hartnell College (formerly called Salinas Junior College) and met the love of her life, Don Mammen. They closed the deal one night over a box of cashews at the local movie theater and became an item from then on. They were married June 8, 1941 and lived in Salinas the rest of their lives with their five children. Ferne worked at Richardson Motor Co. for 30 years as head bookkeeper, and Office Manager. After retiring, she became the Vice-President of her husband's drycleaning business Don's One Hour Dry Cleaning, Inc. and all that it entails.
Ferne was considered the "Matriarch" of the Mammen clan and was very involved in various groups. She was admired by her family for her philanthropy and her kindness to others and enjoyed giving back by offering her services gladly. Ferne was on the board of the Hartnell Foundation, the Heart Association, Zonta, The Historical Society, The Salinas Chamber of Commerce, and The Boy Scouts, to name a few. She received the Paul Harris Fellow award from the Rotary Foundation, and an award for leading the IDC Convention in San Francisco for Drycleaners. She was a member of the The First United Methodist Church, and a leader in the Women's Society and honored for 60 years of service. She was the church treasurer for years and sang in the choir. She was a CAF/MYF youth counselor and sponsored all kinds of activities to support her church.
Later in life, she enjoyed traveling with family members to places like the Pacific Northwest, East coast, Alaska and many other countries.
Ferne is survived by her three children, Marcia Terry, Larry Mammen (Andrea), and Leslie Alvarado; her sister, Janis Shinn, as well as 12 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
Ferne was predeceased by her husband, Donald Mammen; her daughters, Barbara Mammen and Karen Shorsher, and grandson, Jared Mammen.
Ferne was very proud of her family and enjoyed many friendships in her life. She lived her life to the fullest with integrity and was admired and loved by all those who knew her.
The family would like to thank all the caregivers who worked with Ferne over the years, especially our primary beloved caregiver, Janelle.
